Have you ever
thought about how much fun it could be to do the impossible?
The Rev. Richard
Hendrickson wrote a recent column in the United Methodist
Relay in which he said:
I have a new
poster hanging in my office that has on it a picture of some
non-descript swampland in central Florida with a faint image
of Cinderella’s Castle rising from the marsh. Next to the
castle is an equally faint picture of Walt Disney.
Underneath the picture is the word Vision along with a quote
from Walt, himself [which states] ‘It’s kind of fun to do
the impossible.’
As our church
enters into a Capital Stewardship Campaign, I invite you to
keep that statement in mind: “It’s kind of fun to do the
impossible.” Then, as Mr. Hendrickson suggests, use your
imagination. Specifically, “follow the advice of the Disney
Imagineers when they say to, first, ‘Look at the far end –
imagine the experience you want people to have, and then
work your way backward, exploring along the way just what it
will take to achieve the desired outcome.”
For some time,
now, our church leaders have been imagining the kind of
experiences that we believe God wants people to have as the
result of our commitment to Christ. We are being called upon
to carry through on a Vision that has been placed in our
hearts – a continuing Vision that began in the hearts and
minds of those who have come before us throughout almost 225
years.
That Vision in our
time recognizes the need for a new facility. This campaign
will ask us to not only faithfully support the financial
needs of our church’s Current Expense Budget but, over and
above that, to give sacrificially to the Capital Stewardship
Campaign. This will call for many of us to move outside of
our “comfort zone” and rely upon God in a whole new way. It
may involve doing what some people call “impossible.” And
how much fun that could be!!
Yours in the
Love of God,
Yours in the Name of Christ,
George
