The purpose of the Dellroy United Methodist Church is to provide a place where seekers and believers in Jesus Christ from any social or ethnic background can come together to worship the Lord.

 

We are commissioned by the Lord to share the Good News of Salvation in Jesus Christ with those who do not know Him.

 

We seek to create an atmosphere where young and old alike can grow in knowledge, faith, and discipleship. Our authority is God's Word, the Bible.

 

With Christ as our example, we are called to be in mission to the less fortunate in our community and throughout the world, in a spirit of love and compassion.

• Each Tuesday
• Alcoholics Annonymous, 7:30 p.m. in the Church Fellowship Hall (basement)
• Each Wednesday
• Midweek Bible Study, 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. (with Leavittsville) at the Leavittsville Annex (summer) or Leavittsville United Methodist Church (winter).
• Each Saturday
• Men's Breakfast & Bible Study, 8:00 - 9:30 a.m. (combined with Leavittsville) at the Leavittsville Annex (old brick schoolhouse just below the Church).  Men & Young Men - come and join us for a great breakfast and an even greater time of spiritual fellowship with the Lord and with other men!

Monthly Events

• United Methodist Women's Meeting - first Monday of each month. 7:30 p.m. in the Church Fellowship Hall (basement).  All women are invited.
• UM Youth Fellowship - meets usually the 1st Sunday evening of each month, 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. (combined with Leavittsville) in the Church Fellowship Hall (basement). Special meetings and activities at other times (contact the pastor for current schedule).
• Mary/Martha Women's Circle - meets the 3rd Tuesday morning, Sept. - May, with Bible Study at 11:00 a.m., followed by a Carry-In Lunch at noon.  All women of the Charge are invited.

 

• From Carrollton: Go west on St. Rt. 39 to Dellroy, past the Elementary School and Post Office. The Church is located on the southwest corner of Main (Rt. 39) & Ohio Streets, across from the new Community Center.
• From New Philadelphia/Sherrodsville: Go east on St. Rt. 39 to Dellroy. At the stop light, turn RIGHT onto Main St. (Rt. 39). Go 2 blocks to the Church, on the southwest corner of Main (Rt. 39) & Ohio Streets.
• From Magnolia: Go south on St. Rt. 542 to Dellroy. At the stop light, turn LEFT onto Main St. (Rt. 39 East). Go 2 blocks to the Church, on the southwest corner of Main (Rt. 39) & Ohio Streets.

Before 1830, according to local history, a few families were holding services in their homes in the hamlet of Cannonsburgh (Dellroy). In 1830, Rev. John Hare, a circuit rider, preached the first sermons of which we have record, preaching occasionally in a grove of trees not far from the site of the present church.

The first Methodist Society was organized in 1849. A church was built on land donated by Isaac Russell. The first pastor was Rev. Sheridan Baker, who agreed to serve for a yearly salary of $200, plus board and room for himself and his horse.

During the 1880's, a series of "World's Meetings" were held for six weeks. Rev. Harry Harrison was the evangelist, and over 200 conversions were reported. In this period, the church building, which had fallen into disrepair, was renovated and rededicated in 1888.

Tragedy struck the wooden frame church in 1914. As the sexton was fighting the gas lamps for prayer meeting, an explosion occurred, engulfing the structure in flames. Little was saved except the pulpit. That very night four men - Charles Slates, William Snee, William Thorley, and Mel Lytle - each pledged $500 toward rebuilding the church. With the help of many volunteers, the present brick building was constructed. Numerous renovations and improvements have been made over the years, making the church building more functional and in good repair.

Five persons have gone forth from the Dellroy Church to become ministers or missionaries: Rev. D.H. Lee, Rev. Thomas Griffin, Rev. Davis Magee, Rev. Lloyd McQueen, and Rev. Wayne McQueen. In addition, numerous people in and around Dellroy came to saving faith in Jesus Christ at the altar of the Church.
