Adult Ministries at First United Methodist Church
A wide variety of educational and fellowship opportunities is offered at FUMC for adults, both on Sunday morning and throughout the week. Through study and fellowship, we seek to know God. A list of the ongoing opportunities are listed below. If you have any ideas for future studies or classes, please call Jill Capper, director of Christian Education, at 362-4817.
Sunday School Classes
Start your Sunday morning worship by bringing your children to Sunday School from 9 to 10 a.m. and attend adult Sunday School yourself! Everyone is invited to stop in the Wesley Library before Sunday School for doughnuts, coffee or hot cocoa and fellowship!
*Friendly Hour Class
This group has met for many years in room 208 on the second floor of the education building and is made up of our seniors interested in ongoing bible study and companionship. They study a quarterly issue of the International Lesson Series provided by Cokesbury, a Methodist publisher. A recent series included topics such as "Put Faith Into Practice", "Live in Hope", "Live as God's Children", and "Live with Purpose". They read the lesson together, discuss the questions and provide personal comments. The program is biblically based. They welcome new visitors at any time.
*Cornerstone Class
This class meets in room 212 on the second floor of the education building. It is a traditional bible study class covering many topics, which serves a wide variety of ages. Recent studies have included an 8-week course studying Soloman and the book, The Purpose Driven Life. This class also asks for discussion from members and takes prayer concerns weekly. Cornerstone is always happy to welcome visitors and encourages anyone to come and sit in on any Sunday morning.
*Nova Class
The Nova class meets in the Chapel and is currently studying the book of Acts. Serving a wide variety of ages, this class asks for discussion from members and takes prayer concerns weekly. Thoughtful conversation is always found for anyone who may drop in for a class.
*Fireside Class
This class meets in the parlor and is led by Scott Douglas. The class is topical in nature and video based. All of the videos used in the Fireside class come from the Methodist Southern Indiana Conference Library. Each week the class views a video and then discusses it. The Fireside class has a lot of thought provoking topics and discussions, serves a wide age range, and is always open to new visitors.
Additional Education Opportunities
Alpha Course
The Alpha Course is a 10-week course consisting of a series of talks addressing key issues relating to the Christian faith. There is a light meal together at the beginning of each session which gives people a chance to get to know each other. The group then views a video addressing an aspect of Christian faith. After each talk, everyone divides into small groups to discuss the topic of the evening, ask questions and express opinions. The Alpha Course is offered in the fall and in the spring, and is open to anyone interested in exploring the Christian faith. If you are interested in more information, call the church office, or see Suzanne Thompson.
Disciple Bible Study
Disciple I - covers the whole Bible in a nine-month period. One needs to take this study first, as the rest of the studies assume one has taken this course.
Disciple II - covers Genesis, Exodus, Luke and Acts
Disciple III - covers the prophets from the Old Testament and the Letters of Paul from the New Testament.
Disciple IV - covers "The Writings" from the Old Testament as well as John and Revelation
Jesus in the Gospels - combines the material of the Gospels into a study of the word and deed of Jesus
Bible Studies
Pat Hearson, Shirley Thompson and Suzanne Thompson offer short-term Bible Studies for women. Contact the church office for details for dates and times.
Emmaus
The Walk to Emmaus is a spiritual renewal program intended to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. The program's approach seriously considers the model of Christ's servanthood and encourages Christ's disciples to act in ways appropriate to being a "servant of all". The program is based on 15 talks covering a wide range of Christian faith development given over three days. The Walk for our area is held at Hanging Rock Campgrounds and is sponsored by the Burning Hearts Emmaus group for West Central Indiana. There are four walks held each year, one for men and one for woman each in the spring and fall. If you are interested in attending a walk, please call the church office.
Other study opportunities may be available. Please keep your eye on the Chimes--our monthly newsletter--or call the church office to see what is available. We are also very interested in hearing about your interests in new classes or bible studies.
