Survivor Support Groups

- Crime Victims Advocacy
Council, Inc offers Crime Survivor Support Groups
as a community service. They are open to victims
of violent and nonviolent crime. Whatever the
magnitude of the crime, each individual must
struggle with the personal impact of the
violation and it's aftermath. Pain, anger, fear
and confusion - any or all of these may feel
overwhelming and isolating to victims of crimes.
In the group, persons come together with other
crime victims and have a place to share their
experiences. They learn that others are
struggling with similar difficulties, and give
and receive understanding as they listen and
talk. With this kind of support, a crime victim
can become a strong survivor.
- Crime Survivor Support
Groups meet weekly, with newcomers welcome at any
meeting. Two volunteer facilitators who receive
training through Crime Victims Advocacy Council
lead each group. Confidentiality of personal
sharing is strictly observed. At some meetings,
group facilitators suggest a particular topic for
discussion. At the other meetings, group
participants take lead in bringing up topics and
concerns. From the discussion, group participants
can learn how to avoid being immobilized by
depression. They discover methods, which help
overcome fear and anxiety, and learn to be
intelligently cautious without being terrified.
They learn why family members and friends often
do and say inappropriate things, even though they
may care deeply. Resource information and
materials are made available, including referrals
for individual counseling, faith crises, or more
specialized groups or therapy, if needed.
