Hickorytown (ME, c1920) is located on Trindle Road (Pa. Route 641),
approximately 4 miles east of Carlisle, PA. The early history of this congregation
or an EV-ME union congregation that evolved into an ME body when it began
being supplied with student pastors from Dickinson College. One of those
student pastors, D. Frederick Wertz, later became president of the denomination's
Lycoming College and a United Methodist Bishop. A pre-1900 church building
stood for many years just west of the present church property and on the
opposite side of Trindle Road. The church was a two point charge with Boiling
Springs (ME) 1922-1957 and on a three-point charge with Boiling Springs
and Barnitz (ME) 1957-1976. The present building, designed to serve as
office, education, and fellowship hall, was completed in 1972. The original
church building was destroyed when the load bearing wall was damaged beyond
repair by a sink hole. The fellowship hall was converted into the present
sanctuary.
Hickorytown United Methodist Church has a rich history of various religious
affiliations over the years. Persons have worshiped as United
Brethern (UB), Evangelicals, United Brethren (EUB), Methodist Episcopal
(ME), and merged denominations. Present membership is 61 full-members
and numerous constituents. The congregation is undertaking new programs
to witness to the kingdom of God in the community and in the world.
This congregation is supported by the untiring efforts of a strong United
Methodist Women's group that continue the works and traditions of the early
Mission Society.
The Nursery, Sanctuary, and Administrative Office have recently been
remodeled and painted. New drapes and carpets enhance the surroundings.
The ultimate goal is to repaint the entire church in this calendar year.
Endowments and proceeds from various fund raising activities are making
this possible.
If you are in the area, you are invited and encouraged to stop by, especially
on Sunday morning, and worship with us.
