Class and Activity Descriptions

Just Neighbors

“Just Neighbors” identifies and explains several important issues affecting poor families, including housing, jobs, and wages. The study group will apply this information to our own community and identify the specific needs of our neighbors. The goal of the study is to discern how God is leading us to create new missions and ministries to serve children and families living in the Northmont community, ministries which may be developed and shared by all of our churches. Led by Elizabeth Rand, Resident Deacon at Concord UMC.

Leadership From the Heart: Learning to Lead with Love and Skill

Servant-Leadership manifests itself in three ways: 1) submission to Christ; 2) service to others; 3) response to the Holy Spirit. Participants will come to understand themselves as servants of others who meet their needs, and a leader of others who guide them into a relationship with Christ. In the study, you will learn your gifts and come to understand how those gifts can best be used to serve the needs of others in the church and in the community. This study grew out of the experiences of the Leadership Development team at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas. Led by Ruth Solo, Pastor of Englewood UMC.

Living Fully, Dying Well

Our best decisions about life's most important events are seldom made in a time of crisis. Living Fully, Dying Well is designed to assist us in making careful, wise, and prayerful preparation for meeting life's most important moments. This study for groups of all ages inspires us to talk openly about faith and mortality. Topics include biblical and social perspectives on age and growing older, which practical legal decisions are important for everyone, what happens when we die, and how we can live each day to the fullest...starting today. Led by Les Harris, Pastor of Union UMC

Searching for… and Finding Me, Thee and Ye

If the purpose of the church is to help people grow in their relationships with God, themselves and others, then how do we go about doing that? What do we need to know? And what gets in the way? We’ll use stories and experiences from the Bible and Don Miller’s Searching for God Knows What, as well as material from authors John Ortberg, Gary Smalley and Gary Chapman, to search and find our way as we learn more about who we are and who God calls us to become in relationship to God, ourselves and others. Led by Jeff Mohr Pastor of the Clayton & Phillipsburg UMCs and Emmy Lou Davis of Clayton U.M.C.

Journey with Luke

Luke’s Gospel has been called “the most beautiful book ever written.” He writes in an orderly and precise fashion, but behind the human author lies the Holy Spirit. Luke identifies himself with the lower classes, even though he himself was of upper class origin. He says a great deal about poverty and wealth and pictures Jesus as a champion of the poor and distressed. Luke’s Gospel has been called the Gospel for Gentiles, the Gospel of Prayer, the Gospel of Women, and the Gospel of Praise. But the outstanding characteristic of Luke is that his is the universal Gospel. All barriers are down; Jesus Christ is for all humankind without distinction. Bring your Bible! Led by Leroy Chambliss, Pastor of Stillwater at the Y UMC.

Handbellsled by Beverly Jenkins, Englewood UMC
