From the Pastor's Study...

February 12th is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary since his theory of natural selection was first published in the that landmark book, On the , Origin of Species. Groups around the world are marking the occasion with "Darwin Day" celebrations of various sorts. You'll probably be hearing more about the anniversary in the news soon. Some groups will use it to celebrate the career of one ofthe greatest minds in the history of science. Others will see it as an opportunity to champion the cause of science against religion, or else religion against science. After all, that's the sum of Darwin's legacy for many people. His ideas amount to the undoing of belief in God. Atheists and fundamentalist Christians agree on this; the mention of his name is sweet music in the ears ofthe one, a foul abomination in those of the other. Poor Darwin, his name is an axe ready to be ground one way or another.

It's true that that's how some people see things, but not all. Among them are the delegates to last year's General Conference of our Church. "General Conference took a stand on Darwin?" Judge for yourself, but I think it's pretty clear. It overwhelmingly adopted a resolution on "God's Creation and The Church", a call to greater environmental stewardship, and among other things endorsed the work of The Clergy Letter Project, an ecumenical petition drive opposing Creationism and Intelligent Design theories posing as science in public schools. You get the idea from these few lines from the petition...

"We believe that the theory of evolution is a foundational scientific truth, one that has stood up to rigorous scrutiny and upon which much of human knowledge and achievement rests. To reject this truth or to treat it as "one theory among others" is to deliberately embrace scientific ignorance and transmit such ignorance to our children. We believe that among God's good gifts are human minds capable of critical thought and that the failure to fully employ this gift is a rejection of the will of our Creator. To argue that God's loving plan of salvation for humanity precludes the full employment of the God-given faculty of reason is to attempt to limit God, an act of hubris."

Adoption of a resolution endorsing this sort of view might seem surprising. It's our fault, meaning us pastors and church leaders who for
generations have largely neglected to fill our congregations in on the winding course of Christian thought over these past two centuries or more. It's true that Darwin's ideas were first encountered as a shock to the system by most Christians. And yet many believers (some
sooner than others and some still not at all) see him as having done the church a favor. His discoveries and ideas challenged it to struggle toward a grander view of God as Lord even of the limitless heavens, the deep sea of time, and the immense journey of life revealed by science.

So, for what it's worth, Thanks, Darwin! It ain't been easy, but we're still here! The science you helped found and the faith that you felt so alienated from in your lifetime are both still here and, in their own ways, going strong. We've come to believe that the future God calls us to isn't about throwing away what came before. But to preserve and treasure our inheritance means it has to change, grow, stretch, adapt, transform...
yes, evolve.

Pastor Dave

Financial Notes

As we take a look at what we as a church were able to accomplish in 2009, we need to thank God for abundantly blessing us. For it
is through Him that all gifts come, and we are stewards of that which is given.

In 2009, we were able to continue to reach out to our brothers and sisters here in Columbia and around the world because all of the current, everyday expenses that keep the doors to our church open, such as payroll, heat, electric, water, supplies, insurance, taxes, pastor's hospitalization and pension, etc. were met. In addition to this, $7,089 (63%) was sent to the Conference and North Coast District for our Administrative Apportioned Giving. Financial support
of mission projects in 2009 increased significantly. $4,211 (68%) was paid on our World Service, Conference, and District Mission
Apportionments plus $3,128 was provided for the Special Day offerings (Human Relations, One Great Hour, Student Day, Native
American, Peace with Justice, World Communion), Nothing But Nets, UMCOR, Pat Balcziunas' Mexico VIM trip, Walter Merrill's
Haiti mission trip, and local mission appeals. $3,000 was retained in the General Operating Fund to cover bills due in early January.

As we look to the new year, most of us will be making decisions as to what portion of our bounty will be given to support God's mission through the church. As your prayerfully consider how God wants you to respond to His call to reveal the light of Christ in Columbia and around the world, consider these words from in 2 Corinthians 9:7- 8,

"Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work."

2008 General Conference Resolution on "God's Creation and the Church"
(Adopted 839 for, 34 against)

As disciples of Christ, we are called to be good stewards of God's creation. Accordingly, we call upon The United Methodist Church to adopt fresh ways to respond to the perils that now threaten the integrity of God's creation and the future of God's children.

Specifically, The United Methodist Church:

• designates one Sunday each year, preferably the Sunday closest to Earth Day, as a Festival of God's Creation, celebrating God's gracious work in creating the earth and all living things, incorporating it into the church's liturgical calendar, and developing appropriate ways for congregations to celebrate it;
• endorses The Clergy Letter Project and its reconciliatory programs between religion and science, and urges United Methodist clergy participation;
• endorses the work of the National Religious Partnership for the Environment, and the World Council of Churches Climate Change Program and urges conferences and congregations to support their activities and programs;
• supports the annual observance of the United Nations' World Environment Day and encourages conferences and churches to participate in programs such as Environmental Sabbath;
• recommends that annual conferences establish annual awards to honor prophetic defenders of God's creation from within their own constituencies;
• affirms the importance of nurturing, communitybuilding approaches such as the Global Action Plan's Household Eco-Team Program designed to foster resource efficient lifestyle practices;
• encourages a simplified and environmentally sound lifestyle throughout the church and requests that Church agencies, conferences, and congregations be stewards of God's creation by reducing levels of consumption and participating in programs that reuse and recycle goods; and encourages United Methodist institutions to perform energy audits, improve energy efficiency, and pursue use of alternative clean energy sources such as wind and solar power where available.

Our winter semester begins January 14, and we are welcoming everyone back plus newcomer Danielle DeMaria. If you have a child in grades K
through 8 and would like to enroll him/her in the program, please contact Lillie Merrill (330-483-4609). It is never too late to join.

Upcoming themes...
Themes for the next two months include: January 14, "Winter Kick-Off (Everyone is encouraged to wear their favorite football team shirt.); January 21, "Bring the Can Man" (Please bring canned goods for the Columbia Food Bank.); January 28, "Chinese New Year" (Come dressed in Chinese garments.); February 4, "Crazy Shoes" (Wear your funniest footwear.); February 11, "Wannabe Night;" February 18, "Bovine Night" (Wear your farm clothes); February 25, "Ash Wednesday" (Everyone is encouraged to wear purple.).

In case of bad weather...
With the onset of winter, there is always the possibility that Youth Club may be canceled. When that happens, families will be notified by telephone usually before 1:00 p.m. Please remember that school closings may not always coincide with the cancellation of Youth Club. Weather can change within a few hours. However, we will never put
any child or their family at risk. If road conditions warrant cancelling Youth Club, then we will definitely close.

Putting faith to work...
Service is a required part of Youth Club. It is here members learn to grow in service to the Lord through the church. They learn not only to receive,
but also to give. In our program, the primary form of service is choir which is giving a gift of music to God and our congregation once a month while Youth Club is in session. Our singing schedule for the winter semester is January 25, February 19, and March 22.

Church Key Roundup

The Trustees are hoping to get a handle on the number of church keys that have been given out over the years. If you have a church key would you please let us know by signing the sheet on the bulletin board in the narthex? If you have a church key but find you no longer have any real need for it we’d be happy to have it back. You can return it to the church office or to one of the trustees to do it for you. Thank you as this is an important security issue and will help us avoid the expense of making still more copies for those who might legitimately need one.

Columbia Food Cupboard News

More than $800 was raised in the offering taken at the Community Thanksgiving Service held at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seaton church on November 26th. The Food Cupboard has been called into service on almost a daily basis in recent weeks and this is a great boost to this important ministry. Keep in mind that next month, January, is our church’s month to collect staples for the shelves. Due to need, the drive has been extended into February.

Offering Envelopes Available

New church offering envelopes are available in the narthex. We’re introducing a new booklet system this year. There are no more little boxes of loose envelopes. The booklets are more economical and we hope you’ll find them convenient to use as they allow keeping a running record of offerings. There are no numbers being assigned this year so please be sure to put your name on the envelope to help us record your gift properly.

Bishop's 33rd letter to King celebrates 'unforgettable' milestone...

Bishop Woodie White has written an annual letter to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. for the last 33 years, but no letter has been filled with as much joy as the 2009 letter. White, now retired, began
writing a "birthday letter" to the late civil rights leader in 1976, outlining the progress of racial equality in the United States. The 2009 letter celebrates the first black American elected to what is considered the most influential political office in the world — the presidency of the United States of America. Although White never personally knew King, he was among the 250,000 who heard the civil rights leader deliver his historic "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963 in Washington. The bishop writes of the grief that convulsed the country following King's assassination in 1968, and tells how there was "utter joy" 40 years later when Barack Obama, an African American, was elected 44th president of the nation. "We wept unashamedly, men and women, people of all ethnicities and creeds.
"Martin, it was an unforgettable moment! Even as I write, it is difficult to contain the joy or hold back the tears. You would understand," he writes. White was the first top executive of the United Methodist Commission on Religion and Race, formed following the 1968 merger of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and The Methodist Church into The United Methodist Church. He said that when he envisioned what America could be, "I never envisioned a black person as president."

A Little Reminder

Would you like to donate flowers (in memory of or in celebration of) or have a coffee hour on a Sunday Morning?
Just sign up on the sign up sheets that are on the bulletin board. Any questions call church office 236-8822.

Please Help Us Know...when people are in the hospital. Over the last several years, it has become increasingly more difficult for churches to obtain information about their members who are patients in the hospital. This has become even more difficult as all hospitals have begun implementing the regulations of HIPPA (Health Information Portability and Protection Act). This was enacted by Congress to protect the confidentiality and privacy of patients.

This has changed things for the Spiritual Care of patients. Even if someone from the hospital asks about your church affiliation, or asks if you would like the pastor notified - it does not mean that the church will be contacted. If you would like the pastor or church to know that you are in the hospital; you MUST contact the church yourself, even before you are admitted. This is the only way the church can offer help and support.
