"Why is it called Lent?"

In the English language, LENT was formerly referred to by the Latin term quadragesima (from the original Greek tessarakoste, the "fortieth day" before Easter).
This nomenclature is preserved in Romance, Slavic, and Celtic languages (for example, Spanish cuaresma, Portuguese quaresema, French careme, Italian quaresima, Croatian korizma, Irish Carghas, and Welsh C(a)rawys.

In the late Middle Ages, as sermons began to be given in the vernacular instead of Latin, the English word lent was adopted. This word initially simply meant spring and derives from the Germanic root for long because in the spring the days visibly lengthen.

The Blueberry Brunch is coming!

Song of the Shadows

After a one year hiatus, the Chancel Choir, accompanied by a 17 piece chamber orchestra, will be performing "Song of the Shadows" on Good Friday evening, April 10th, at 8:15 p.m. This is a very moving musical program of song and liturgy focusing on the struggle of Christ as He faced betrayal and accusatory slander on the eve and day of his crucifiction. It is a "dark night of the soul" period for all of our days. Please plan to come and join in this evening of special worship. A reception follows the service in our fellowship hall.
