Deletion of the United Methodist Church Web Ring

The United Methodist Web Ring was deleted on May 25, 2001 due to concerns by the General Council on Finance and Administration of the United Methodist Church over use of the cross and flame logo.

The UMC Web Ring was started in September 1996 by United Methodist Richard Lipp, and turned over to my as ringservant in December of 1998.  As of today, there were 471 United Methodist Organizations represented by the Ring.

The GCFA has now contacted me twice over the UMC Webring, and I have been unable to satisfy their concerns.  For this purpose, I am deleting the UMC Web Ring.

It has been my desire to create an online community of United Methodist Organizations. The internet represents unbridled free speech, and as such, I believe that the church is called to stand in the arena, to be the light.  Further, I love the Web Ring concept because it makes us 'connectional' in true Methodist style. But I cannot police every site concerning proper use of the church's emblem.  I totally understand the need for a company to guard its trademark, but this is the church, and I really don't understand the position of the GCFA.  Is the cross I wear around my neck going to be the next item that must bear a trademark?  Will we now be cited when we wear a label pin?  My heart is saddened that so much time, money, and effort is spent seeking the proper use of a logo, instead of making Disciples in the name of Jesus Christ.  I wonder where we are putting our priorities.

May God continue to bless each of you in your web ministry to your church.
