Bishop Lyght appoints Jeannette Bassinger-Ishii District Superintendent Bishop Ernest S. Lyght has appointed the Rev. Jeannette Bassinger-Ishii to be district superintendent for the Connecticut/New York District in the New York Annual Conference. She will assume her new position on September 1, 2004, replacing the Rev. Jane Allen Middleton, who was elected a bishop and is assigned to the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Area, also beginning September 1st. Currently, Bassinger-Ishii is pastor of the Darien, Connecticut, United Methodist Church, having served in that appointment since 1995. She is a 1974 graduate of McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois, where she earned her M.Div. degree. She also holds a B.A. degree in English from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, graduating in 1970.She has been a full member and ordained elder in the New York Conference since 1977. From 1974 to 1975 Bassinger-Ishii was Associate Pastor of the Floral Park (Long Island) United Methodist Church. In 1975 she became part-time youth pastor in Fresno, California, as well as a part-time, court-appointed marriage counselor in Fresno. She returned to the New York Conference in 1975 to become pastor of the Wakefield-Grace United Methodist Church in the Bronx where she served until being appointed co-pastor at Bridgehampton, East Hampton and Sag Harbor United Methodist Churches in 1978. In 1980 she became pastor of the Maspeth (Queens) United Methodist Church, and in 1989 she assumed the position of senior pastor at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Rockville Centre (Long Island). The Rev. Bassinger-Ishii has held several positions within the New York Conference. She has chaired the Conference Relations Committee during her four quadrennium-membership on the Conference Board of Ordained Ministry. She has been a director of the United Methodist City Society, chaplain of the Noroton Heights Volunteer Fire Department, chaired the Clergywomen’s Caucus and been a member of the Parish Consultants Network. Jeannette is married to the Rev. Takayuki Ishii, pastor of Metropolitan Duane United Methodist Church in Manhattan. They have one child, Scott Kenji Ishii. Bassinger-Ishii will be living and have her office in the former Delaware Hudson parsonage in Newburgh, New York. Jeannette reports that her hobbies include auditing classes and the local community college, reading and walking.
