Agape Community Center
Agape Community Center seeks to improve children’s academic performance and social skills by pairing a volunteer/ mentor to work with each participant. They also provide children with a hot, nutritious meal prepared by volunteers, and with transportation to and from the center. In conjuction with the Carl Sanders Buckhead YMCA, the Agape Community Center also administers RAGTime, a multifaceted program for senior citizens and disabled adults in the community. Participants engage in an array of activities including informative programs, fitness programs, recreational outings, bingo, quilting, arts and crafts, on-site transportation and shopping trips. A hot lunch and transportation to and from the programs are provided.
AIDS Walk Atlanta
AIDS Walk Atlanta is the southeast's largest AIDS fundraising event, raising over $1 million for people living with HIV/AIDS in Georgia. AIDS Walk Atlanta is a fundraising walk-a-thon that begins and ends in Piedmont Park.
Alzheimer’s Association-Memory Walk 2005
Memory Walk is the nation’s premier fundraiser to help those battling Alzheimer’s disease. This year, the Georgia Chapter is pursuing a $2 million goal to support families and individuals in Georgia who are impacted by Alzheimer’s. Volunteers take time to register walkers, man checkpoints and offer refreshments.
The American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based voluntary, health organization, dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. They are always looking for volunteers to help them extend our reach in the community. Whether it is office support, community outreach, or special events, your support will make a difference. Most opportunities are available Monday through Friday during business hours. They also have opportunities on the weekend and evenings.
American Red Cross
The American Red Cross activities where volunteers can lend support include the following: teach safety and leadership classes to youth, teach CPR and First Aid, respond to local disasters, provide administrative/office support for these services, special fund raising events, teach the community about disaster preparedness.
The Arthritis Foundation – Georgia Chapter
The mission of the Arthritis Foundation is to improve lives through leadership in prevention, control and cure of arthritis and relegated diseases. The foundation has a sub-organization specifically for children and young adults. American Juvenile Arthritis Organization (AOJAO) is a council devoted to serving the needs of children, teen and young adults with rheumatic diseases and their families. The foundation raises funding for arthritis research through annual events – the Arthritis Walks (increasing in number every year in Atlanta and other cities in Georgia), the Bob Strickland Golf Tournament, and our annual gala, the Crystal Ball at the Ritz Carlton in October. It also provides a large number of community and outreach programs (in over 300 facilities) to accommodate Georgians already living with many forms of arthritis, including children.
Atlanta Children’s Shelter
The Atlanta Children’s Shelter provides developmentally appropriate instruction for homeless one month to five years of age. Volunteers are an integral part of the program. Volunteers assist the teachers in the classrooms such as reading, art and other activities.
The Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children is a daytime home and resource center for any woman and child needing refuge from the streets of Atlanta. Women and children from various night shelters and from the street go to the Atlanta Day Shelter early in the morning to be treated. Guests, ranging in age from three days to ninety years old have a "home" during the daytime hours…a place to have meals, to take showers, to wash clothes, and to make and receive telephone calls. Most importantly, the shelter is a place guests find friendship, love and understanding. Additionally,the shelter works toward the full employment of all of its residents. Over the years, they have been able to help many mothers with small children provide for their families again.
Atlanta Habitat for Humanity
Atlanta Habitat for Humanity’s work is nothing if not unique, innovative and important. They build approximately fifty quality, affordable, attractive, EarthCraft certified homes for purchase by hardworking low-income families each year. Homebuyers, sponsors, volunteers and staff all make enormous investments of time and resources to make affordable housing a reality.
The Atlanta Metropolitan Black Chamber of Commerce
The Atlanta Metropolitan Black Chamber of Commerce (AMBCC) engages in business, government and community affairs. The mission is to serve as an advocate for the creation and growth of profitable and competitive black-owned entities. They are committed to providing quality educational and training programs that emphasize economic development, ownership, and wealth building practices. They seek to place college interns at various member locations in the following fields: communications, entertainment, social services, medical, real estate, public policy, arts, and a variety of other fields.
Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System
The mission of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System is to assist individuals in meeting their educational, informational, and cultural and leisure needs by providing open access to ideas and information affording personal and ultimately, community benefits.
AVID-Advancement Via Individual Determination
AVID is an academic program that is designed to enhance students who have grade point averages of 2.5 – 3.5. These students are served by providing organizational tools, on-site tutorial, and an enhanced writing curriculum. The subjects vary from English, Math, Social Studies, Science and Foreign Language.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta is a private, nonprofit organization and an affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and United Way of Metro Atlanta. Founded in 1960, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta serves more than 2,200 children annually, making it one of the largest affiliated agencies in the United States. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta teaches children to dream and to succeed. With a powerful combination of volunteer leadership, internal expertise and external leverage, the organization develops a community of mentors committed to the children of Atlanta.
Breakthrough Atlanta
The mission of Breakthrough Atlanta is twofold: to prepare underserved Atlanta public school students, beginning in middle school, to succeed in high school and to successfully enter and thrive in college; and to serve as a training ground for a diverse group of prospective teachers, targeting those groups typically underrepresented in the teaching field. Classes are held on the campus of The Lovett School in northwest Atlanta.
Bridging the Gap
Bridging the Gap is a non-profit organization located in the heart of Atlanta in the YMCA across from Morris Brown. The organization aims to bridge the many educational and social gaps that exist within the surrounding colleges and communities.
Community Tutorial Program
With the aid of the talented students in the AUC, Emory, Georgia Tech and other Regional universities, they hold tutorial sessions for youth (1st grade – High School) in the surrounding communities. Tutoring sessions have a twofold purpose: to provide assistance to students with their homework or various school subjects; and to foster healthy relationships between college students and the surrounding communities.
Love and Life
This branch of the program focuses onsituations and problems that youth, college students and adults face on a daily basis. They provide an environment and support system where people can talk about difficult situations and receive advice and recommend courses of action. As a volunteer, one can be a part in the planning and organizing of the different events. Past focus areas have included seminars on “Love, Lust and Infatuation”, “Dealing with Depression”, “Dealing with Temptations”, “Brotherhood”, “Marriage”, etc.
Boys to Men/Girls to Women
The “Boys to Men” program allows the impressionable boys to see and experience positive role models in their life. Upstanding male college students connect with maturing boys once a month to engage in educational, recreational and social activities, ultimately developing close bonds between the college students and their mentees. The “Girls to Women” is in the developmental stage and is currently looking for dedicated young women with a passion for mentoring.
Brownwood Recreation Center
Brownwood Recreation Center’s main objective is for volunteers to serve as a tutor and role model to children and/or teens. Volunteers assist youth with homework and tutor them in areas where they need assistance.
Buckhead Christian Ministry
Buckhead Christian Ministry provides compassionate assistance to families of all faiths who are facing hardship. They provide rental, mortgage, and utility assistance, groceries, employment needs and run two housing programs that focus on financial rehabilitation. Volunteers are needed to meet with clients, answer the helpline and work in the food pantry.
C. L. Gideons Elementary School/Hands on Atlanta
We will need volunteers from 4yrs and up. Our activities will include painting, planting flowers, artwork/hand and feet prints on the pavement, and cleaning up. We are in need from 9:00am-1:00pm. Volunteers will be responsible for providing their own transportation and the names and contact info will need to be turned in no later than September 21, 2005. Students are also reminded that if they are not willing to utilize the MARTA transportation system, carpooling is also suggested.
The Center for Family Resources
It is the mission of The Center for Family Resources to strengthen individuals, families and communities. The Center for Family Resources serves homeless and low-income families to encourage their self-sufficiency. There are four main areas of program services at The Center for Family Resources. Direct services provide assistance for rent, utilities, prescriptions, transportation, and food. Case management provides each family receiving financial assistance with help to assess their own situation and find solutions. Employment/Education Services for both youth and adults include classes in job readiness, and retention skills. The Housing Services program provides short-term and transitional housing for homeless families, which includes comprehensive case management with supportive services. The fourth program is Community Services involves community building, community leadership development, and volunteer services.
The Center for Positive Aging
The Center for Positive Aging is committed to providing and promoting programs and services to all seniors and their families regardless of ethnicity, disability, or financial resources. They believe that positive aging is accomplished through cultivating a healthy mind, body, and spirit. Our programs that provide intergenerational social experiences help combat isolation and loneliness. The Center for Positive Aging provides a vital service to our community and you can too by “affecting real lives and making a real difference.”
Charles R. Drew Charter School – After School Program
The After School Program (ASP) at Charles R. Drew Charter School serves approximately 250-300 of the schools 700 students in grades K-8 th. The Students at Drew charter school are predominately African American and a good portion come from low income homes. While Drew Charter is a choice school open to any student zoned for an Atlanta Public School System they primarily serve the families in the Villages of East Lake. Those who volunteer on Enrichment days would be paired with Enrichment class they find most interesting our have the most background experience with. The Sports component is only one day a week.
Chris Kids, Inc.
CHRIS Kids, Inc. heals victimized children so that they can grow up to become contributing members of the community. They are a program of last resort before institutionalization or destitution. The mission of CHRIS Kids is to break the cycle of abuse by healing children, strengthening families and building community. Our mission is accomplished one child and one family at a time. Through CHRIS Kids, you can help save the life of an abused child in Georgia. Throughout the metropolitan Atlanta area, CHRIS Kids operates nine therapeutic group homes for abused and neglected children, two independent living programs for transitioning youth in need of life skills training, aftercare services and a variety of community programs that help children and families in crisis. Our programs are successful.
The Committee to Elect Yolanda Johnson for The Atlanta Board of Education, District 6
The committee is currently seeking volunteers for all positions. Positions range from phone banking to yard sign placement. Students interested in Political Science or Atlanta politician general will be allowed to input ideas that they would believe helpful with the process. Transportation to media events, and other volunteer opportunities provides if needed. Students are asked to come with a mature attitude and some knowledge of professionalism, several positions available.
Clara Walton Foundation, Inc.
Clara Walton is a national speaker and Breast Cancer Survivor. In collaboration with partners, sponsors, and resources to serve the community and aid in the eradication and education on major community health initiatives, partners and other resources provide some screening services.
Cobb/Douglas Community Services Board
The Cobb County Community Services Board and the Douglas County Community Services Board are public agencies created by state law to provide mental health, developmental disability, and substance abuse services. The service areas are Cobb County and Douglas County, Georgia.
The agency's goals include: consumer preference; work initiatives; and the expansion of the availability and access to natural community supports through the reduction of stigma. Our programs are JCAHO (Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) accredited. The Cobb County Community Services Board and the Douglas County Community Services Board are national Best Practice providers as exemplified in the following demonstration grants funded through the US Department of Labor, Office of Disability Employment Policy: Customized Employment, Workforce Action, Training and Technical, and Assistance to Providers.
Communities In Schools of Atlanta
Communities In Schools of Atlanta mission is to connect community resources with schools to help young people successfully learn to stay in school and prepare for life.
Compeer Atlanta
Compeer Atlanta is a private non-profit organization established in 1986 that matches trained volunteers and at-risk individuals on a one-to-one basis in supportive friendships. This consistent friendship gives a senses if self-assurance to the at-risk person and helps to battle a mental illness, a developmental disability or the isolation experienced by some elderly persons.
Compeer Atlanta volunteers fill the gap between prescribed clinical services and the support system of family and friends.
Cool Girls, Inc.
Through a unique, multi-pronged programmed approach Cool Girls enables participants to see a world where they are valuable, powerful and independent. Program goals include: 1. Enhancing academic achievement, 2. Developing sexual decision-making skills, 3. Promoting wellness and physical activity, 4.Understanding technology, money management, communications, and career development, 5. Developing leadership skills and, enhancing knowledge of life’s opportunities.
Creative Community Services
Creative Community Services works with therapeutic foster children, mentally retarded/developmentally disabled adults and provides after school and summer programs. They improve the quality of life for the children and, adults and families through community-based support and services.
Families First
Families First is an 115-year-old metro Atlanta and Georgia agency whose mission is to “strengthen and preserve families in partnership with them and their communities”. Families First is dedicated to serving the local community by providing a safe haven to abused and neglected children through adoption, foster care and after school programs; offering accessible crisis counseling to families and individuals on issues such as drug abuse, teen pregnancy and prevention, domestic violence and anger management; and work side by side with neighborhood residents to engage in community problem solving on issues such as safe children, safe streets and safe housing. Last fiscal year we served over 100,000 clients in metro Atlanta.
Family Prevention Resource and Learning Center @ Zion
The FRPLC at Zion, Inc.’s primary objective is to prevent the underage use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD), and violence in youth. It also strives to make the community aware of the risks associated with the use and availability of ATOD and the use of violence. The twofold mission is: to prevent substance abuses by children an young adults by building strong families and by helping to build safe, drug-free communities in North Fulton County. They offer programs and resources for children and their parents that strengthen family bonds, as well as career support programs and resources for individuals trying to obtain jobs.
Fulton County Parks and Recreation
The mission of the Department of Parks and Recreation is to provide for the public a standard of excellence in service, facilities, programs and preservation of resources while working in concert with residents and the County’s leadership. The clients they serve are pre-school age through the eldest senior citizens in metro Atlanta area. Our department provides a sanctuary for the human spirit, where people live, work, play, and grows in a safe and wholesome environment.
Georgia Center for Children
The Georgia Center for Children is a non-profit organization with the mission of helping sexually abused children and their families. They are currently recruiting volunteers to help with their fall fundraising events. Volunteers are needed for their participation during the PGA Tour at East Lake Golf Course and at Phipps Plaza’s Teeny Tiny Holiday Homes.
Girls Incorporated
Girls Incorporated is a national, non-profit organization that serves girls ages 5 – 18 years old in after-school programming, summer day camps and outreach programs. Our hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 11:00am – 7:00pm. Our two Girls Incorporated centers are located in Marietta, Georgia and Austell, Georgia. We do not provide transportation, however our Marietta Center is less than one block from the Cobb County Transit Station. Presently, we are in need of college students and college organizations that can prov ide help with completing homework, lead workshops on specific topics, conduct theme parties, and lead sporting activities.
Goodwill Industries of North America – Book Department
The mission of the Book Department is to financially support Goodwill’s mission and training programs that are offered. Why volunteer at Goodwill? The work one does is turned directly into funds supporting job training for people with employment barriers that live throughout the North Georgia area.
Grady Health Systems
Grady Health System (GHS) improves the health of the community by providing quality, comprehensive health care in a compassionate, culturally competent, ethical and fiscally responsible manner. Grady maintains its commitment to the underserved of Fulton and DeKalb counties, while also providing care for residents of metro Atlanta and Georgia. Grady leads through its clinical excellence, innovative research and progressive medical education and training.
Volunteerism: Volunteers add to the quality of health care and render valuable aid by helping to promote understanding in the community of the System's aims and services. Requirements include: At least 18 years of age/Reference Check/Health and fitness necessary to perform volunteer assignments. Minimum assignment 3 hours per shift, once a week (except for Rape Crisis Center) for three months. Completion of training courses required for certain areas. Benefits include: Free parking in our well-lighted, patrolled lots, uniform provided, complimentary meal when performing volunteer assignment. Grady Health System is located in downtown Atlanta and is Marta accessible.
Habitat for Humanity of South Fulton
Habitat for Humanity of South Fulton is a non-profit, Christian organization that works in partnership with individuals, businesses, churches, civic groups, and corporate employee groups to build, decent, affordable houses with qualifying people in need. These houses are sold to the homeowner partners at no profit and with interest-free mortgages. The mortgage payments are placed into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build future homes in the community. While Habitat’s mission is to eliminate substandard housing, this affiliate is further committed to promote change in the lives of the homeowner partners and in the communities in which they live. Habitat relies on the support of volunteers and organizations to carry out this mission. Volunteer opportunities include: Construction: This opportunity is only available during a build. The next build dates are on Saturdays from September 24 to November 19. Volunteer opportunities are limited and are assigned on a first come, first serve basis. No experience is necessary. They provide the tools and training, you just have the fun! They have several standing committees that do the behind the scenes work of the affiliate. Typically the committees meet once a month in the evenings and for special events. Committees include: Building committee, Church relations, Resource Development, Family Selection, Family Support, Volunteer Recruitment, and PR
Hammonds House Galleries
Hammonds House Galleries is the only African America art museum in Atlanta. The museum provides guided tours of temporary and permanent exhibits to the general public and private tour groups. We also host special events in the evening and are in need of volunteers. Administrative Assistants are needed to support membership activities and public relations/marketing efforts.
Hands on Atlanta – Discovery Project
The Discovery Program is a model educational initiative, which boosts aspirations and self-confidence of students through a multi-faceted, volunteer-led program. The program strives to convince children of the importance of education, to broaden their horizons and to be a positive force in their lives. Through their participation, volunteers see first-hand the challenges facing schools and the needs of low-income communities and their students. Two or more times a month, interactive tutoring sessions are held in six schools for students in Pre-Kindergarten through-fifth grades.
Hands on Atlanta – Reading Adds Up!
The partnership between Hands on Atlanta, Atlanta Public Schools and Project GRAD has created Reading Adds Up, the next step in the evolution of Hands on Atlanta’s widely received America READS program. Developed to support the Superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools’ initiative to ensure every child is performing at or above grade level by third grade, Reading Adds Up brings the community into the schools to assist students performing below grade in reading and math.
HOPE worldwide-Georgia
HOPE worldwide- Georgia is a non-profit organization promoting the healthy development of children and families residing in at-risk communities by providing access to social, health, and educational support services. Our Child Development Program has quickly become one of the leading mentoring and tutoring initiative s in the state. The Program is designed to help improve the academic performance and psychosocial development of at-risk youth by providing critical year-round tutorial assistance. The design includes a comprehensive character education and life-skills curriculum along opportunities. They utilize research proven models to achieve tutoring success with our students including on-site coordination, peer tutoring and assessment-based instruction.
Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless
In 1970, Rev. Dr. Hosea L. Williams launched Hosea Feed the Hungry an organization offering support services to working families whose below-poverty wages force them to choose between hunger and homelessness. Hosea Feed the Hungry has grown beyond anyone’s imagination, from two to four dinners per year and year round programming activities including a food bank giving out food baskets daily; on-the-job training center, services to 15 Atlanta area shelters and transitional houses; small micro grants to stop evictions and utility cutoffs; corporate volunteer opportunities and much much more.
HYPE (Helping Young People Excel Inc.)
HYPE is a non-profit organization whose vision is to aid in the growth and development of young people in the community. Our mission is to generate and strengthen relationships with the younger generation as they strive to live victorious and successful lives in today’s culture. HYPE aims to focus on the personal, physical, educational, professional, spiritual, and social development of our youth.
Innovative Learning Concepts
Innovative Learning Concepts (ILC) provides service to schools and school districts that focus on culturally responsive pedagogical strategies, primarily in mathematics and science instruction for students, and include professional development for educators through conferences, workshops consulting and evaluation. Research and evaluation, strategic planning and program design are also available to further support schools and school districts in their efforts to improve student performance. ILC offers individual tutoring services for students and develops and directs after school and summer programs to reinforce mathematics and science instruction in an informal academic environment.

John Hope Elementary School
John Hope Elementary School is located in the King district we are need of tutors and mentors for students to help them in reading and in math. John Hope Elementary is dedicated to the premise that all students can learn given appropriate stimuli within a safe and supportive environment. They affirm that every child, regardless of social, economic, or physical status has an inherent right to an excellent public education. They are committed to the education of the whole child, including the development of character as well as academics, and the teaching of citizenship to promote a sense of civic responsibility. They believe that nothing can be accomplished until a child feels self-worth, and our comprehensive educational program reflects that belief.
Junior Achievement of Georgia
Junior Achievement is a nonprofit organization that seeks to teach children (k-12 th grades) about the economics of life and the free enterprise system. They utilize volunteers to teach our activities. Kits are developed for each grade level. Elementary programs have 5 activities, middle school has 6-8 activities and high school has 8-12 activities.

March of Dimes
The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. They carry out this mission through research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies’ lives. March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against the threats to their health.
Metro Atlanta Urban Young Life
Metro Atlanta Urban Young Life is a National Christian Outreach program for high school land middle school students. Metro Atlanta Urban Young Life currently serves high school students in the Atlanta Public School system and DeKalb County schools. Our volunteers serve as “adult-friends” to high schoolers by visiting their schools, tutoring, spending time with them on the phone and at the mall. Our volunteers complete a once- a week training, and are then placed on teams with other volunteers These teams strategically set out to build quality relationships with teenagers at a specific school They also prepare a weekly after-school activity called “club.” At club, students enjoy games, skits, snacks and a 10-minute message about Christ. Our volunteers also accompany students to a weekend camp in January and a weeklong camp during the summer.
Metropolitan Hospice
Metropolitan Hospice's mission is to ensure professional, compassionate and holistic healthcare that allows for peace, comfort and dignity for people experiencing life-limiting illnesses.
Our volunteers are essential members of the hospice interdisciplinary team. As a volunteer, you can either work directly with patients and families by providing emotional, spiritual or clinical support or by tending to errands otherwise left undone. In addition, you may provide support to the hospice team in the office.
National Kidney Foundation of Georgia
The National Kidney Foundation of Georgia is dedicated to the prevention, treatment and ultimate cure of kidney and urinary tract diseases. The Foundation brings hope across Georgia to people with kidney disease through programs in research, patient services, public information, professional education and organ donation.
NUCUP – National Urban Coalition for Unity and Peace
The National Coalition for Unity and Peace, Inc. (NUCUP) is a nonprofit community based organization that works with youth to achieve academic excellence, well roundedness, and an attitude that leads to success. NUCUP is accepting volunteer applications from students to volunteer in the Multi-Media Communication Institute. A student will be required to formulate his or her schedule that can be strictly adhered to, and also required to attend orientation. The student’s contribution will be everlasting, as he/she will experience the joy and appreciation in the smile on a face or the look in the eyes of the child who has gained an understanding of and completed an assignment. As a volunteer the student will gain a greater knowledge of the different situations that put inner-city youth at risk to losing focus of that which keeps a student on a path to success.
Odyssey Healthcare
The team at Odyssey HealthCare works to improve the quality of life for patients facing terminal diagnoses and provide support for their loved ones. They have been meeting this need since 1996. Today, Odyssey is one of the largest hospice providers in the country, offering end-of-life care and support to thousands of patients and their families across the country each day. Volunteers would help to provide companionship and emotional support for patients and families.
Oglethorpe Elementary School has a long and rich history of educating a diverse population of students in and around the Atlanta University Center. The student body numbers 350 students in kindergarten through 5 th grades. Their ages range from 5 to 11 years old. Currently, the student body is overwhelmingly eligible for free and reduced priced lunch, living in single parent households or with grandparents and by many standards considered “at-risk”.
Volunteer services are appreciated in a number of capacities that assist classroom teachers, special area teachers, media center, support professional and the reading program. (The reading program requires daily reading practice of every student, which necessitates many volunteer hours of listening to young readers.)
Parkside Elementary School/Hands on Atlanta
Parkside sponsors a Discovery Program that is held two Saturday’s a month along with Reading Adds Up, a tutorial program that adheres to the volunteers schedule/during school hours. Parkside is located in the Grant Park area where they serve children K-5.
Project Nobility After-School Academy
(Spelman College in partnership with Brown Middle School)
The program designed for middle school students’ grades 6-8. The volunteers will assist students with math, science, and enrichment activities and field trips.
Raising Expectations, Inc.
Raising Expectations is a nonprofit mentoring and tutoring program that works to educate and empower youth in challenging circumstances by providing an opportunity to build strong academic skills, develop self confidence, pride and leadership skills. Reach Out and Read at Hughes Spalding Children’s Hospital
Reach Out and Read makes literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric primary care, so that children grow up with books and a love of reading. ROR at Hughes Spalding Children’s Hospital .ROR at HSCH was established in 1994 and was the first ROR program in Georgia. Over 7000 families with children age 5 or younger are followed for pediatric primary care at HSCH. Most of these families are economically disadvantaged and over half of the parents’ report that they were rarely read to as children. In 2003, ROR at HSCH gave away over 18,000 books to children, while providing education to thousands of parents about the importance of reading. Volunteers in clinic waiting rooms read aloud to children, showing parents and children the techniques and pleasures of looking at books together.
Safe Landings, Inc.
Safe Landings, Inc. was formally established in April 2004. We are a non-profit organization that provides home-style housing to young mothers who are homeless. Sometimes a shelter may not be the best thing for a certain individual. Each year in the Atlanta, Georgia Metropolitan Area, there are between six and seven thousand homeless young mothers. SAFE Landings, Inc. was formed to try to help reduce that number by creating programs and services to change the attitude of homeless young mothers. These programs and services were set up so that the young mothers would not feel as if they were in a shelter environment but a family style setting. Each program or service is geared towards breaking the cycle of homelessness by changing the negative decision making process and sharpening daily survivor skills needed in today’s world.

The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta have begun to emerge from a plan in which we challenged ourselves to upgrade the expectations and ultimately the quality of service we proved. With state-of-the-art facilities that include computer labs, learning centers, gyms, teen centers, commercial grade kitchens, community rooms and jr. games rooms. Our staff is highly skilled, experienced, trained, and motivated. Our attitude is one of achievement and constant improvement. The result is life-changing programs for our children. In fact, statistically, members of our program have significantly lower incidences of teen pregnancies, death by violence, and incarcerations than non-members in our communities. Members also boast a 92% high school graduation rate versus 55% for non-members. We are committed to continuing and increasing the level of service provided to our children, and thank you for your support in helping us to do so.
The West End Unit (Donnelly Street) specialties are education, cultural arts and teen services. They have a fully equipped Tech Lab. Their mission is to develop their young members so they will be productive adults.

SisterLove, Inc. is the first and oldest nonprofit community based nonprofit in Georgia to focus specifically upon the needs of women, particularly African American women and those of African descent, who are at risk for contracting HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases and infections.
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer, sickle cell, and other catastrophic diseases. Founded by late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tennessee, St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. No family ever pays for treatments not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay. St Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fund-raising organization. We do several events nationwide where volunteers are needed.
StandUp for Kids – Atlanta
StandUp for Kids is a national non-profit organization. In addition to helping homeless and at-risk youth with immediate necessitates such as food, clothing, shelter and personal hygiene, StandUp for Kids offers a wide array of services, including: assistance in finding housing; education assistance; vocational development; counseling; heath services’ and legal assistance. Volunteers also conduct life-skills training, covering such areas as budgeting, banking, apartment cleanliness and safety. StandUp for Kids is to empower homeless and at-risk youth toward lifelong personal growth through an on-the streets outreach program, and to create in these youth a sincere caring and belief in themselves through open, straightforward counseling and education programs, thereby helping them ac quire the life skills necessary to become effective members of their community.
Trees Atlanta
Trees Atlanta is a nonprofit citizen’s group dedicated to protecting and restoring our urban forest. They work in all parts of the city of Atlanta, and other areas inside the I-285 perimeter. Throughout volunteers, they plant 2500 trees a year and maintain all of them for at least 2 years after planting. They also have a forest restoration program that removes invasive species from greenspaces throughout the city so that they can be returned to recreational use. They hold volunteer projects every Saturday morning from 9-12pm. They plant trees from October through March, and maintain them by mulching and pruning the rest of the year. Volunteers usually meet at the site where they will be working. Volunteering with Trees Atlanta is easy, just RSVP and show up they provide all instruction and tools.
The United Methodist Children’s Home
The United Methodist Children’s Home (UMCH) is a private, non-profit agency whose mission is to help needy children and their families as they struggle with life’s issues. Help is provided through outreach services to strengthen the intact family and identify problems in the dysfunctional family, as well as group residential care for children on our 100-acre campus or in our family foster homes. Our desire is to help children feel safe, to be safe, to feel cared for, and to realize that they are worthwhile and capable.
United Way 211
211 is a 24 hour 7 days a week bilingual referral service for human and health needs. No charge it is able to refer individuals to agencies to help with mortgage, rent, clothing, food, dental, counseling, looks, shelter, transportation, childcare, and almost of other emergencies.
United Way of Metro Atlanta – Gifts in Kind Program
Gifts In Kind Atlanta connects donated goods with the nonprofit organizations that need them most. In four years, the program has leveraged more than $7 million resources – meaning nonprofits can redirect their dollars from supplies to programs and services.

Project Dunbar After-School Program
They offer a free after-school program, which consist of homework assistance, cyber lab, healthy snacks, and arts. They serve the children form Mechanicville Housing Community.
Women in Combat Ministries
The focus of Women in Combat Ministries can be best described by Luke: 4:18: “The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor.” Women In Combat is an outreach ministry in the Atlanta metro area that primarily works with local and social agencies in helping to change the social and economic outreach. They address everyday challenges and help to implement solutions to empower the individual. Over the last two years of service, they have fed thousands spiritually, physically, mentally and emotionally.
Young Women Christian Association (YWCA)- Teens on the Rise
The service goal of the YWCA program “Teens On The Rise” is to prepare youth for social and academic success by increasing healthy behavior and reducing health risk associated with sexual decisions and practices. They are looking for tutors to reinforce the instruction of the classroom, and to improve further academic skills. They are looking for mentors to be trusted counselors and guides.
