~  from the Senior Pastor  ~

“Start-up time” is here!  The building, somewhat quiet during the summer months, is bustling with activity.  I get excited just seeing the number of cars in the parking lot.  The message is “Church Hill United Methodist Church is alive!”

Our “Good Neighbor” groups are back: Churchill Preschool, Liberty Senior Citizens, the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts (new this year), The American Red Cross Blood Drive folk, the Aerobics Class, and many other worthy programs.  I am pleased that so many in our community experience hospitality and welcome at our church.

Of course, I am especially delighted to hear music from the sanctuary as our Chancel Choir and Praise Team rehearse for Sunday services.  Our CHUM Youth had a Kick-Off Tail Gate planning meeting last Sunday, and I was thrilled to see how many teenagers have put Sunday evening youth Fellowship on their schedules.

And then there is Sunday morning church school.  Classes for all ages are back in session.  We even have a new adult class started for people who have no class affiliation.  They are studying the Gospel of Luke.  It is not too late to sign-up, and you would be most welcome!

Soon it will be start up time for King’s Kids Club.  Remember, the first session is on Wednesday, September 24.  Encourage the children you know to come to the church at 4:45 to learn about Jesus, sing songs, play games, eat supper, and enjoy many creative activities.  There is always need for adult volunteers.  I am sure that Terri West, Children’s Director, will be happy to sign you up.

I appreciate all of the people who make this church hum: our able custodial staff, trustees, and volunteers who clean, repair, and beautify our facilities and grounds; our program staff and volunteers who put together the educational and music ministries that help us worship, learn, and grow as disciples; our administrative staff and volunteers who follow through on tasks that keep us informed and connected; our pastoral staff and volunteers who remind us daily of God’s love, grace, and care.

We are indeed a blessed people to be surrounded by an array of faithful disciples “each doing their thing” for the upbuilding of the body of Christ.

Consider this a special invitation to participate in the life of our church, beginning with worship every Sunday morning.  We are one church under the Lordship of Jesus Christ with many opportunities for service and growth.  Won’t you come on in.  You’ll be glad you did.

— Love and Peace, Rev. Judy

WANTED AND NEEDED!

CHUM YOUTH DIRECTOR

Jennifer Smith, former Church Hill United Methodist Church Youth Director, has begun her studies toward ministry at Drew Theological Seminary in New Jersey.  She recently wrote to us expressing her joy for this wonderful opportunity to prepare herself to serve God more fully.  She thanks us for our loving support of her ministry here.

Our Staff Parish Relations Committee is now taking applications to fill this vacancy.  Church Hill’s SPRC is committed to providing a Youth Director for our CHUM Youth.  This is a paid, part time position with responsibilities for leading the Junior and Senior High young people of our church.  Our youth ministry is already underway, so a person interviewed and hired, could begin immediately.

Primary youth gatherings take place on Sunday evenings, 6:00 p.m. at Church Hill United Methodist Church.  However, the youth calendar also includes such events as a CHUM Youth Winter Retreat and occasional Youngstown District and East Ohio Conference programs.  Plans are underway for a well-rounded program that includes Bible study, worship, study, and discussion on current topics, service to others, fun, food, and fellowship.

Church Hill UMC is blessed with many talented and Spirit-filled youth.  They are able to take the initiative and lead their peers as Christian disciples.  Our church is also blessed with a group of committed parents and other caring adults to lend their support to our youth people and their program.  In fact, a vital program is already projected to the end of this year and the beginning of 2004!

But, our CHUM Youth need a leader to “steer the ship”!  Perhaps God is calling you to offer your time and talent for this worthy ministry.  Please give careful, prayerful attention to this opportunity.  Contact Jon Burns, SPRC Chairperson, Barb Zetterquist, Lay Leader, or Judy Olin, Pastor for more information.  All may be reached through the church office, 330 759-0118.

Hi from Children’s Ministries!

This past Sunday was RALLY DAY, and it was exciting to see everyone back to Sunday School!  We hope that those who didn’t make it last Sunday will join us this Sunday.

~  Bibles  ~

Each year children in the 3rd and 4th grade class receive a Bible presented by the church.  This year, children will receive their Bible on Bible Sunday, November 16, during the 11:00 a.m. service.  These children earn their Bibles by attending Sunday School for eight Sundays between now and November 9.  During this time these children will be learning about the Bible and how to use it.  After receiving it, they will use their Bible every Sunday in Sunday School.  Children in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades who already have their Bibles are encouraged to bring it with them to Sunday School.  We’re hoping that all 3rd and 4th graders who don’t have a Bible will come to Sunday School so that they can earn one!

~  King’s Kids Club  ~

This children’s program begins Wednesday, September 24 at 4:45 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.  Children, preschool – 6th grade are welcome; no charge.

~  SCISSORS NEEDED!  ~

We need your help in donating scissors for our children in 3rd through 6th grade; see collection basket on table in the Narthex.  Thank you.

In His love,

Terri West

Children’s Ministry Director

Worship Alive!

Don’t come up “missing in action”

Somebody recently visited Church Hill United Methodist Church who commented,

“I’m back for worship alive!”

Actually, CHUM offers two opportunities to worship the Lord of Life.  At both the 9:00 and the 11:00 services worshippers turn to and honor God.

How do we do this?

We bow down in obedience.

                        We rise up in gratitude.

                                    We remember and pray.

We receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

We join the community of believers.

We dedicate our lives to service and witness as disciples of Jesus Christ.

As you plan your fall calendar, include “worship alive!” at Church Hill United Methodist Church every Sunday.  Make time to rejoice, reflect, and rest.  The saying is true:  “When we rest, we don’t miss out on life, we learn to appreciate life and God’s good gifts.”  See you in church!
