Savannah, Georgia---Wesley and two friends and a guide set out to walk to the Cowpen. After three hours they came to a creek the guide had forgotten about. "There was no remedy but wading through," John wrote. A couple of hours later they came to a swamp which they decided to walk through (the water was breast-high!).
They walked on, totally lost, until sunset, when they discovered their tinder was wet. That meant they could make no fire. "I was for walking still, but both my companions ... were for lying down."
Wet clothes and wet ground soon encased them in a frozen cocoon of frost, in which John said he slept 'til six the next morning. A heavy dew added a white blanket to their topsides. Wesley wrote in his personal diary, "almost dispirited."
