Order Of Worship
First Sunday In Lent March 5, 2006

THEME
In the great flood, the Creator judged our sin and preserved life. In the waters of baptism, God washes away our sin, puts to death our old, sinful selves and gives birth to our new creation, our new being. Our sin is serious, yet God?s creative love is stronger.

WE HONOR AND GLORIFY GOD
*Call to Worship:

L: In purple and green and gold, it shines over all the world; in purple and red and orange, it colors our life:
All: The eternal promise of God, the everlasting grace of the Christ, and the healing warmth of the Holy Spirit
L: In truth that never wavers, in love that never ends, in life that is never defeated:
All: The saving power of God will stand before the world.
How many whimpers have been whispered?

*OPENING HYMN:#2001 "We Sing to You, O God"

*Welcome and Greeting

*Call to Prayer: #61 "Come Thou Almighty King"

Prayer of Invocation:

L: Speak to us deep within the flooded places of our lives, Holy Spirit. Show to us your life in our midst as we gather here in faith, O God
All: We believe; help us in our unbelief. Amen

Prayer of Invocation:

L: Glorious God, your thoughts are not our thoughts, neither are your ways our ways.
All: We scan the finest of our neighbors, anxious to find the flaw.
L: You view the time in the context of eternity , and so find a place for waiting, for yearning, even for suffering, eve for dying.
All: We demand instant results; and look for tomorrow before savoring today
L: You know that only one who suffers can ultimately save, that is why you walk the way of the cross
All: We fear that vulnerablility which defies our power; and so we cry for crucifixion
L: Your thoughts are not our thoughts,
All: Neither are your ways our ways.
L: And yet we know that your way is the ladder to heaven, while, left to our own devices, our ways slope downwards to hell. But we are here, not to have our worst confirmed, but to have our best liberated. So we pray,
All: Forgive in us what has done wrong, repair in us what is wasted, reveal in us what is good
L: And nourish us with better food than we could ever purchase: your word, your love, your inspiration, your daily bread for our life?s journey, in the company of Jesus Christ, our Lord.
All: Amen
