One Body, Many Parts

a puppet project of Christ Church United Methodist and Friends

On June 13, 2004, we marched GIANT puppets in the Troy Flag Day parade.

Imagine a pair of hands that measure more than 6 feet from fingertip to wrist. There are eyes the size of large sombreros, complete with blinking eyelids! There’s even a nose that can fit a whole child inside. Each of these creations is a giant puppet that works on its own. But when you put all the puppets together, they form an even larger character.

On June 6, 2004 the Sunday School used these puppets to bring an epistle lesson to life. You can hear an mp3 of their 3 minute presentation here.

Inspired by a passage in Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, the puppets are a metaphor about community. Communities are made up of the people who show up. We have different talents and perspectives. Sometimes we disagree. Sometimes we might not even like each other. But when we work together we become so much more than when we act alone.

Thank you to Steve Boaden of Masque Theater Inc. has been working with us to bring this idea to life. In keeping with the theme, we opened the project to the general public and have been pleased with the response. Thank you to everyone who has contributed money, materials, and time to this project. We could not have done it without you!
