CHRIST COMMUNITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
(BOWMAN UNITED METHODIST CHURCH)
Bowman was organized in 1879 and was dedicated in 1881. It was named in honor of the Bishop Thomas Bowman. The church has had several locations before it was built at its present location. The present building was built and completed on May 29, 1921.
Twenty-seven Ministers had served this Church before the present pastor.
In June of 1970, our church was appointed its first black pastor, Rev. Aubry Jones, who reorganized the church. Bowman became a new church. New officers were installed, new programs were inaugurated, the building remodeled, and a new institution was formed. Bowman has become a church with great spirit, with a new concern for the community and the people it serves.
One of the most outstanding accomplishments has been the building of a new congregation with 50% of the members having been members less that six years, a tremendous increase in attendance. A great number of children are coming into our church school. It received several new members this year.
We have had many programs that have given hundreds of youth jobs, and many adult supervisory positions and have served several hundred children in our area. We sponsored an outstanding Bible School, to serve the church and the members of the community.
Bowmen have modernized its facilities and have secured new musical equipment and have renovated its sanctuary. The sanctuary now has been air-conditioned and a new sound system has been installed.
Since reorganization, Bowman has initiated a number of community programs. Our Summer Programs provided recreation, training, tutoring, and care for many children in the community. Our Day Care Center served over several children from 2 to 14 years of age, for ten years. Bowman now serves Senior Citizens.
Bowman is a community church, where community organizations, such as the Public Schools, Community Schools, Block Units, Urban League, and many other similar organizations are allowed to use the building to help carry on the concerns of the community.
Bowman with its many programs and community outreach, its great spirit of togetherness and love of God, is sure to continue to grow with the leadership of our Pastor. This is our Fourteenth Anniversary after Reorganization.
A Name change has happened, just a little later, the rest of the story. ? .
