State of the Sanctuary
A
motion was made and passed at the April 23 administrative Council Meeting to
request that all future donations for memorials and honorariums be made to the
Sanctuary Repair Fund. So the question
is “What is the Sanctuary Repair Fund? “and why does
it need repairing?
The
Sanctuary Repair Fund is a designated account that is not in the general budget These funds
are designated to making repairs and other improvements to the Sanctuary that
were not part of the general budget.
As a structure
ages from time to time it requires repairs that are above the normal upkeep and
maintenance of the building. Some of the
areas that need attention are:
1.
Window Framing for the stainless glass windows
is starting to deteriorate and if not repaired can cause the windows to become
unstable and during a high wind storm could fall out of the frames. The frames need to be replaced and the
windows resealed.
2.
The regular windows in the Sanctuary need to
have the frames resealed.
3.
There is a water leak from the flashing on the
roof that is causing damage to the internal walls and needs to be repaired .
4.
The inside and outside of the building needs a
fresh coat of paint most noticeable is the outside wooden trim around the roof
line and the inside walls have paint pealing off the
wall.
5. Organ : Several of the large Trumpet 16’
pipes, #1-12 had collapsed due to the miters failing from heat. Four of the pipes need to be sent off to a
pipe shop for replacement/repair; DD, DD#, EE and FF. The yoke supports
are at the top of the pipes and there needs to be a yoke support added in the
middle to hold the pipes in place so they do not collapse again. There was a large air leak on the Swell
bellows where a rodent has chewed through a gusset. Leaking air is noisy and affects the tuning
of the organ through a change in air pressure.
The leather is 40 years old and near the end of its life
expectancy. It is recommended that all
four corners of the bellows be re-leather.
The concern with the
heat has been corrected by adding a large vent to allow better air circulation
to the organ room (room behind the pipes in the choir loft that houses the
major components of the organ).
These
are the major concerns at this time. The
Trustees’ Committee is aware of these concerns and is currently working on a
solution to them. They are also
considering future needs to the Sanctuary and are formulating a plan of action.
Our
Sanctuary is a Historic Building over 100 years old and has not had any major
repairs performed on it since the late 1960’s.
It has and will continue to serve our congregation well. It just needs a little TLC (Tender Loving
Care) from time to time.
Us Postal Service food
drive
Saturday,
May 11, 2013 is the day the US Postal Service has set aside to assist
local food banks in replenishing their shelves. On this day, please place
non-perishable food items on or in your mailbox for your mail carrier to pick
up. Collection bins will also be in the lobby of the Chipley Post
Office the week of the food drive. All items collected stay in our
area. You can make a difference, if each household donated 2
cans/boxes, many hungry families could be fed. If you have any questions,
please call Jennifer Lowery at 326-5944.
Note: Food collected locally
is donated to The Care & Share Food Pantry in Chipley. Listed are some of the most requested items.

11:6c
Dear
Ambassadors of Christ,
This
week, I received a letter from Don and Nancy Richards.* In it, Nancy told me that she is
trying to set up a sponsorship program for high school students. The program will consist of wonderful
students with great potential whose futures look bleak because they have no
funds for high school. Nancy is calling
the children who are part of this program the Magnificents.
She
asked me if it would be ok to put the secondary students from God’s Grace
Ministry* on this sponsorship list. I
told her, “Absolutely.”
The students from God’s Grace who will be on
this list are:
Zainabu: She is 15.
Her mother is alive and makes a living by fishing. On a day of good fishing, she makes around
$3.00. With a poor catch, she makes
about $1.25. Next to Scovia, Zainabu
is facing the most pressure to become a prostitute.
Scovia: Her father is dead and her mother is HIV
positive. She has four brothers. Her mother kept telling her she must go out
and make some money as a prostitute, telling her it is good practice for
marriage and the family's only hope for survival. She is currently at an all-girls boarding
school on the Mainland.
Ifa: is a wonderful young
man who loves the Lord and likes to preach. His mother died of cancer and his
father suffers from a problem with his kidneys which results in swelling and
extreme discomfort. He has three younger
sisters that he takes care of.

Elizabeth: Elizabeth is also fatherless. She has 2
sisters and 2 brothers. Her mom fishes to support her family.
Soleman: He is 14 and lives with his grandmother who
is taking care of him. He is happy and
active.
Would you like to get to know one of these Magnificents
and pay $50 a month ($600 a year) to enable them to get through
Secondary School? If you would, I would be more
than happy to talk with you and help you get started.
P.S. I have news of Millisant. She is the girl who was forced into
prostitution during the school break and became pregnant. The man who conceived with her has taken her
to Uganda. She will probably never be a
part of the program again, but that does not mean that God cannot still do a
mighty work in her life. Continue to
pray for her. With God nothing is
impossible!
Hope Schofield
*Don
and Nancy Richards are the founders of SEEK (Suba
Environmental Education of Kenya) Ministry that God’s Grace ministry is run
through. They are the overseers and
mentors of Ken and Nancy Omalla.
*
God’s Grace Ministry is based on Kakrigu, Mfangano North Island in Kenya, Africa. The goal of this ministry is to provide
physical and spiritual nourishment to destitute children and youth through an
education and a relationship with Christ.
*Ken
and Nancy Omalla are the founders of God’s Grace
Ministry, whom Luke and I served with on our mission trip to Kenya.
1 John 3:16-19: “We know what real love is because Jesus gave
up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and
sisters. If someone has enough money to
live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can
God’s love be in that person? Dear
children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth
by our actions. Our actions will show
that we belong to the truth, so we will be confident when we stand before God.”
Youth Activities:
On
Saturday April 27 the Youth Fellowship had it second yard sale. The Youth Fellowship would like to thank the
community for all there support in making this event
so successful. They raised over $ 1200.00 from the
sale of items donated. The funds raised
from this event will go toward financing their annual retreat to Snowbird
Wilderness Outfitters in June.
In
addition to the yard sale the youth also do odd jobs such as yard work or spring
cleaning for members of the congregation to earn funds for their trip. You can contact Luke or Hope Schofield to
make arrangements to have the Youth come perform any odd jobs for you.
Sunday
May 19 is Pentecost Sunday and Youth Sunday.
The Youth will conduct the service and deliver the message for this
special Sunday in the life of our church.
This service will be a combine worship service meeting in the Sanctuary
at 11:00 a.m. During the service the
youth will recognize all 2013 graduates, High School and College. If you are aware of a Senior
who will graduate please contact Luke Schofield with the name and school they
will graduate from.
Recent events:
Ladies Spring Tea: On April 8th
Methodist Women held their annual “Spring Tea”.
There were over 50 ladies present and they even had a table designated
for the “younger ladies in training”.

Beautiful decorated tables and delicious finger foods. Beautiful hats,
lovely ladies.

FUMC’s Newest Arrival: Levi Nicholas Taylor April 23, 2013 7:49pm

Proud
Parents are Amanda and Michael Taylor.
Congratulations on such a sweet boy.
Methodist Men’s Golf
Tournament: On
Saturday April 20th the Methodist Men held their 6th
Annual Golf Tournament at Dogwood Lakes Country Club. A great time was had by all involved, the
team of Ed Franklin, Cody Wood, finished in first palace, second place went to
the team of from Trawick construction, third place
went to Dan Burdeshaw, and history repeated itself
again as the Laus Deo team
finished in last place for the fourth time in the last 5years (However they did
win the first event and are the only team to play in all six events). But the
true test as to how successful the tournament was is in the raising of over $
2,600.00 for the helping hand ministry.
And a special thank you to the 92 hole sponsors
that make this possible, without your generosity none of this could happen.
Thank you. Next year’s tournament date
is set for Saturday April 19, 2014.

Dedication of the John Wesley
