ABREUS METHODIST CHURCH

Address:     Maceo 98 entre Cerafin Sanchez y J. Rodriguez
                  Abreus 5770, Cienfuegos
                  Cuba

Place:
    Abreus is a small town with a population of 7,500. It is located in the providence of Cienfuegos, and its economic base is essentially agricultural, mainly sugar cane and vegetables. Although it is small in size, Abreus has serious alcoholism and adultery problems within its population

Church:
    The church was founded in 1905, with a new family in town. Reverend Deulofeo was the first pastor.

    The first building was destroyed by a tropical storm in 1935 and the Reverend John Stroud, a missionary from Florida, built the present building with donated funds to build a memorial for Colin Kelly, an American soldier who was killed in the Second World War.

Pastor:
    The church pastor is Jorge Luis Moreno Ortiz, a 20 year old man from the city of Santiago de Cuba. He is single and has several years of missionary experience.

Leadership of the church:
    The local work committee is composed of the following members:
President:                        Odalys Ramos
Secretary:                        Santiago R. Leyva
Treasurer:                        Nitza Capdevila del Puerto
Accountant:                    Alis Rodriguez Herrera
President FM Men:         Santiago Leyva
President FM Women:    Lidia Rodriguez Capdevilla
President LM Youth:      Lisandra Carmenatis

The church presently has 30 members, with a typical congregation of 40 people on Sunday. The church members are of all ages and tend to 3 adjacent missions: Ariza, Limones, Charcas, and other nearby small communities. This church has traditionally been strong in traditions and missionary work. However, the church does not have any musical instruments or audio equipment as it is a very poor community.

Problems:
The pastoral house (parsonage) has serious problems, mainly: a leaking roof, inadequate doors and windows, and termite damage to structural wood members and wood sidings. The church building, with a capacity of 150 people, is much deteriorated, especially damage to the roof by a fallen tree during a tropical storm in 1996, with cracks and leaks. Additionally, the windows exhibit termite damage, same can be said for the wood altar.

The church does not have any means of providing Sunday School classes (children nor adults). They also lack musical equipment for church activities and celebrations.

Needs:
* Repair of the Parsonage
* Reconstruction of the church roof and altar
* Construction of a mission building
* Assistance with the work of the Sunday School programs
* Medicines
