Church History

Chapel Hill dates its origins to United Brethern Classes organized in local schools as early as 1861. We officially began with the union of the Sodus and Shanghai United Brethern Classes in 1869 to form Chapel Hill. The church was greatly strengthened by the union of the Naomi Evangelical United Brethern Church with Chapel Hill in 1966. Among recent new members, several families have come from the former Bainbridge and Grace United Methodist Churches. Earlier groups uniting with Chapel Hill include persons from the former Sodus Methodist Church, the Mount Pleasant Christian Church and the United Evangelical United Brethern Church.

The Church started with a small white wood-frame structure on the corner of Naomi and Hillandale Roads that seated around 100 people. In 1963 the educational unit was built to accommodate the growing number of children in Sunday School. It was constructed primarily by volunteer help from the congregation. By 1977, we prayerfully started construction of a barrier free facility and, in 1978, were blessed to begin worship in the new sanctuary.

The strength of our heritage is in the God who loves and cares for all people. We are part of a Church that, for over 130 years, has sought to reach out to all people in the name of Jesus Christ. We have been blessed in the ongoing journey to be the Body of Christ.
