NOTHING BUT NETS
Nothing But Nets is a global campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa. $10 will purchase a net and save a life. The people of the United Methodist Church, along with Sports Illustrated, NBA Cares, The United Nations Foundation and several other groups are raising funds to purchase bed nets to stop the mosquitoes from biting and put an end to malaria. At this time, no consistently effective malaria vaccine exists.
Send a net and Save a Life. Bed nets work in two ways: they stop mosquitos from biting during the night and spreading the disease, and the insecticide on the net kills mosquitoes when they land on it.
So far the Channahon United Methodist Church as earned $1,168.52 for Nothing But Nets. Show your support and buy a net. Checks must be marked “Nothing but Nets” and can be placed in the offering plate or sent to the office.

BOOKS AND BREAKFAST
We would like to share with you a brief book review of the book we read in April. We believe that it is an important read for any parent or grandparent. The book is called Who's Raising your Child? By Laura Buddenberg and Kathleen McGee. It is about our current culture and the many things we want and own that make us believe that a good life is a “Material-successful” life and the primary goal is to garner material possessions to the point that we neglect the development of character.
It explains how our media advertising leads our children to believe they are not cool and that they are unhappy because something is lacking in their lives; their looks, possession, etc. advertising promotes this need to be cool; to conform, fit in, and keep up with your peers. Do you know that your age 7 and younger children see 40,000 commercials in a year? This book explains how marketers and the entertainment industry place high rating ahead of the welfare of our children. It also gives caretakers of children ideas on how to fight back. Our Channahon Library carries this book and some of our church members in the book club have it. This is a “must read” for parents and children and teens.
The May 3 rd book is Don't Drink the Kool-Aid: Oprah, Obama and Occult's by Carrington Steele. All are welcome to meet at Enjoi's at 8:00am to discuss. The June 7 th book is When the Rivers Run Dry: Water - The Defining Crisis of the 21 st Century by Fred Pearce. Any questions about book club or to be put on their email list contact Cindy Vong 467-6840.
