I discovered something the other day. I discovered something that women have known since the dawn of time, and that is, men are not very smart.

Now, please understand, it’s not easy for me to stand up here and admit that my species is not the brightest to ever walk the earth, but there comes a time, when we all have to accept the truth, and truth of the matter is, men aren’t very bright!

This revelation came to me while I was walking to a restaurant in Abbeville. It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of food, all types of food, and this occasion I was craving Chinese.

It was a crisp evening, there were people exercising by walking around the square and there were teenagers clumped together talking and carrying on, it was a typical southern night in a typical southern town.

I like to think of myself as an observant person, people and how they act interest me, and as I was crossing Washington street, I was absorbing the life that was all around me.

The two ladies who briskly walked past me, the tourists who reading the inscription on the Confederate monument, the high school girls that were giggling by the fountain, and the teenage boys hanging out of their 1978 Chevy truck honking their horns at the girls by the fountain.

Now, this is where the male species has let me down.

Never in the history of male/female relations has the honking of a horn impressed a woman.

You will never see or hear of a lady who hears the honking of horn from a passing car or truck, and immediately drops all of her things and takes off running, desperately trying to catch that romantic mating call!

If this were the case, then every single man would be a fireman!

This is not just limited to teenage boys in Abbeville, but all over the country we will see men whistling, and yelling, and honking their horns trying to capture the heart of a young lady.

If the horn doesn’t work, many resort to using loud stereos or purple lights under their cars trying to lure them in like moths to a flame!

My brother’s technique was a little different, but still just as ineffective. When he was 15 years old he and a friend would walk up and down coast of Myrtle Beach looking for any poor girl to harass.

And when they spotted an unsuspecting girl, they would run in front of her and start singing "you’ve lost that loving feeling" convinced that their singing would woo and impress any female in the tri-county area!

But it never happened!

We’ve put a man on the moon but we have yet to learn how to talk to a female.

Horns, loud music, and bad singing. These are the best ideas we’ve had so far.

But I really can’t say much, I’ve honked my horn and I’ve turned up my radio in hopes to grab the attention of a girl.

What does attract a woman? I have no clue, like I said, we’re not very bright. We’re just extremely lucky.

I don’t mean to pick on us men, but we can all relate, one way or another to taking the wrong road to fulfillment!

We all get hungry!

We all have something that is burning deep within our bellies.

We can’t ignore it and many times it drives us to success and many times it drives us to death.

We all have a need, a hunger, for companionship, for someone one to talk to, to eat breakfast with, to laugh with, to cry with, to grow old with, but many times we take the wrong road to get there, such as honking horns.

We all have a hunger!

I had a friend who would stop at every single convenience store he saw.

It wasn’t because he loved Smoothie’s or Nutty Buddies, but it was because he was hungry.

But his hunger wasn’t satisfied by hot dogs or potato chips, his hunger was money, and the chance of winning it big on the poker machines.

Hour after hour he would sit and hit the buttons and feed more money into the machine, and hour after hour he would watch as his dollars vanished one by one.

"It’s time for it lose!, the big payoff is coming!" He would tell himself and he would feed more and more money, and he would lose more and more money.

He took out loans to try to satisfy his hunger, to quench his thirst for money, but the burning deep in his belly was never put out. His hunger was never satisfied.

There is so much hunger in this world!

Walk into any bookstore on any given day and you will find an entire section devoted to making us feel good. Books and books written to help us find peace.

Millions of dollars are spent on those books to unlock the secret peace that must live within us, to silence the rumbling in our souls!

But after the last page is turned and the last word is read, we are still hungry!

There is so much hungry in the world.

Countless couples eat in silence across the breakfast table, reading the paper, sipping the coffee, watching the news. Never a word spoken, never a smile given.

Surely there is something more! Surely there is more to a marriage than silence, surely there is more to love than cold looks over hot coffee! Hunger!

Millions and millions of people all over the world are starving and it’s not due to a lack of food!

Many of us are going the motions day after day, restless, knowing that there is something missing in our lives. We try everything, puppies, vacations, seminars, we spend money, we save money, we give money, but it’s still there!

Burning, churning, rumbling. Hungry.

There must be an answer! There must be a way to quench this thirst and calm this hunger that roars deep inside! Surely there is an answer!

How can we go through life forever unsatisfied? How can we face each day knowing that something is not right, feeling the sure rumble of hunger, swallowing the loud cry of thirst to only go another day without food or drink to quiet those pangs?

What’s burning deep inside right now? What is churning and rumbling, what are we hungry for? Is there a void crying out ready to be filled?

Are our mouths dry from despair and anxiety?

What are we hungry for?

Life, love, purpose, hope, peace, joy?

Are we hungry for meaning, are we thirsty for assurance?

Honking the horn offers nothing.

Reading the words of others offers only a temporary satisfaction.

Taking our chances with a machine offers desperation.

Silence offers distance.

Material goods only offer us more stuff.

Christ offers a meal.

Christ offers us a meal that will never again leave us unsatisfied.

Christ offers us a meal that will forever quench our thirst and quiet the rumble in our bellies.

Christ offers us a meal that will be with us forever, Christ offers us the bread of life.

A bread that points the way to peace, a bread that guides us toward happiness. A meal that instills hope.

A wine that reminds us that there is still love in the world, and that love is God, and that love is for us.

Through faith we are given the bread of life, we are able to feast of the goodness, forgiveness, and mercy of God!

Never needing more, never seeking more, never wanting more!

The bread of life moves us to what true, real happiness is all about. The bread of life warms us with a love beyond our capabilities. The bread of life makes us richer than any jackpot or paycheck.

The bread of life is the only nourishment we need! It’s all the nourishment we need.

The bread of life is fed to us through our faith in the one that gives it.

The bread of life is present in the sacrament of Holy Communion. In which we remember the great sacrifice of Christ, so that we may no longer experience hunger, so that we may no longer know thirst.

And so that we may feast on the bread of life at the heavenly banquet for all eternity.

No more burning, no more churning, no more rumbling.

Only peace.

In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
