Mary Magdalene, the
first witness
to Resurrection and the “first apostle”, has gained popularity, in
recent years, as an iconographic subject, although ancient depictions
of her are lacking. We will do a decidedly contemporary rendition, but
true to the tradition. Immerse yourself in her story as you write her
icon, and experience her zeal for the Gospel.

Even at its best, pastoral
ministry is a demanding profession. And when conflicts rage in a
congregation, when old solutions don’t work any more, when the sermon
pool is running dry, and when you have cared for persons in pain and
don’t have easy answers any more, how do you keep your balance in the
midst of it all? Tending The Fire may be for you. These
retreats are based in family systems theory as developed by Dr. Murray
Bowen and Dr. Edwin Friedman in his book, Generation to Generation.
Why Anxious Congregations
Do Dumb Things
A Seminar in Two Parts:

With Joan Lartin-Drake, RN, Ph.D.
First Seminar, May 14, 10AM-3PM
[1] Identifies predictable responses to runaway, congregation-wide
anxiety;
[2] Participants identify their part in fueling this anxiety.
Second Seminar, Sept. 17, 10AM-3PM:
[1.] Explores alternative strategies, including long-term planning and
examining problems in a larger context;
[2] Enables participants to take helpful positions on issues while
maintaining healthy contact with those who differ; to operate
from a factual basis; and stay in a “work” mode during periods of
intense anxiety.

When anxiety runs through
a congregation, the leadership may find itself doing all sorts of
things to calm down themselves and others, but these efforts often
create more anxiety. These strategies are more-or-less
automatic! Some, however, are able to see these strategies as
problem-creating rather than problem solving. Then, there is hope
that a different strategy will prevail. These seminars, based on
family-systems theory, developed by Dr. Murray Bowen and others,
provide alternatives to “quick-fixes.” Family-systems
theory is applicable to all organizations, because all have similar
emotional processes running through them.
