Quality Living Program Update
The Quality Living Program has completed its first 12 week session. The program
began last July. Four individuals were assigned to us, and we began working
to teach them ways to better use their personal finances. We had some success.
One client began to understand budgeting and came in with her own budget
plan. Another began to understand better grocery shopping methods to ensure
enough to eat all month. The third found a job to supplement her welfare
income. There were bumps along the way, but God's grace was sufficient.
The administration of this program is, for me, a goodly amount of work. However,
the amount of work for me will not increase significantly with more volunteers
helping a larger group of clients. I would like to encourage more people
to consider this outreach program. It would take about 2-3 hours of your
time each week. All it requires is a willingness to listen and help others.
We are currently gearing up for a second 12 week session. The classes will
be held on Wednesdays at 8:00-9:30 am in the Centennial Room. Anyone interested
in finding out more about this unique outreach, please call me.
THE BUILDING BUZZ
By Ruthann Jaquette
The "Building Buzz" does not accurately describe the activity in the building
as of late. Building rumble would be closer to the mark as the elevator project
gets back into full swing after a slower summer. The 35-foot piston shaft
has been completed and by the time you read this report, the piston itself
should have been placed into the shaft. After that, the Capital entrance
will take on quite a different look as the last of the walls to be demolished
will be removed to make way for the new construction.
During the spring and summer, the Trustees undertook the extensive project
of the restoration of the tuck pointing and mortar joints around the outside
of the church, along with some much needed roof and chimney repairs. One
hundred plus years of Mother Nature's freezing and thawing had done extensive
damage that was allowing moisture to leak into the interior of the building
and was beginning to undermine portions of the foundation. At this time,
the project has been completed except for the bell tower (which is in need
of rather extensive repairs) and is slated to be completed next spring, along
with the cleaning of the exterior of the building.
Last spring the Trustees completed a lengthy list of needed repairs both
large and small, if you as an individual or your church group as an interest
in a service project, please consider one of the the projects from our list.
I am confident that we can find a project that matches your interest and
skill level.
BRING A FRIEND SUNDAY Sunday, November 1, 1998
Over 85% of Americans who are church members visited their church for the
first time because a friend or relative invited them. That is an amazing
statistic! Because personal invitations are so important to the growth of
our congregation, the Evangelism Outreach Commission has scheduled a Bring
a Friend Sunday for November .
This will be a regular Sunday service with an extra emphasis on welcoming
visitors. We will have a special church tour for visitors during the Sunday
School period.
We hope that every member of Central church will invite at least one person
(or family) from our community who does not have a church. We all know people
in this categoryand many are good friends of ours. Central Church is
a great church. Let's ask those friends to join us on November 1st. It would
be wonderful to fill our church to overflowing!
