MISSIONS & MINISTRIES

Our congregation is a very warm and friendly fellowship of Christians, and we are blessed in so many ways. We share those blessings through involvement in many missions endeavors and ministries:

Locally...

  • Prison Ministries - Christmas Care Packages and books have been provided for women in prison and copies of the Upper Room are provided for some of the men at Turney Center. CUMC deeply appreciates all of the hard work the crew from Turney Center has put into refurbishing and maintaining our building.
  • College Care Packages – These packages have been provided by the UMW for our church’s college students. They include snacks, cards, note paper and stamps, and copies of the Upper Room.
  • Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force- In an effort to curb abuse of Drugs and Alcohol, CUMC has formed a Task Force to explore and establish policies and programs in the church and the community.
  • Early Lifestyles Pre-School – This pre-school meets at the church on Monday and Wednesday mornings. It serves children, 18 months to 3 years of age, who are at risk for developmental delay. In the Fall of 1998, the school began enrolling typically developing children, also. It is affiliated with Kings Daughters School of Columbia, and funded by a state grant.
  • Meals on Wheels – CUMC has suported this program for many years. This valuable community service provides a hot meal five days per week to shut-ins. On Tuesday of every week, folks from our church deliver the meals.
  • Women are Safe – This is a local shelter for victims of domestic violence. CUMC has supported this organization financially, and we currently have an on-going effort to supply paper products and cleaning supplies for the program.
  • American Red Cross Bloodmobile – In an effort to help with the constant need for blood, CUMC hosts a Bloodmobile four times each year.
  • Radio Ministry - CUMC’s Sunday Worship Services are broadcast live each week on the local radio station.
  • Bulletins to Shut-Ins – Each week, church bulletins are delivered to our shut-ins. Also, hymnals are provided for those who request them, so they may more fully participate via the radio.
  • Good Samaritan Fund – CUMC maintains this fund to assist local residents with emergency financial needs.
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Operation Christmas Child

Regionally and Globally...

  • Volunteers in Mission - UMVIM assists interested individuals and groups who seek Christian service opportunities.
  • United Methodist Committee on Relief – UMCOR assists churches in direct ministry to persons in need in the areas of emergency response, refugees, hunger, and poverty.
  • The Bishops Initiative on Children and Poverty - In 1996, the Council of Bishops called upon The United Methodist Church to reshape its life in response to the crisis among children and the impoverished and in faithfulness to Jesus Christ.
  •
  • Miriam’s Promise – This program’s mission is to support pregnant women, birth-parents, adoptive parents and families as they struggle to discern the best possible course.
  • Martin Methodist College - Founded in 1870, this is a coeducational, liberal arts college, offering four year and two year degree programs.
