New Opportunities

Local Missions Ministry
Help us be the heart of our community by supporting our Local Missions Ministry (LMM) as we work to touch the lives of those living in our area. Each month the LMM team will coordinate volunteer opportunities that will help make a difference in our neighborhoods and in the lives of those we strive to serve. Of course we are always looking for volunteers and new ideas, so if you would like to get more involved, please contact Rich Bensmam at rb@labindc.com or Jenna Welch at jennaawelch@yahoo.com.

Help out with Sunday morning nursery care
Did you know it is United Methodist Church policy that two adults be present for the care of children in our nursery? Ms. Joanne, CHUMC nursery care giver does such a wonderful job with our littlest members each Sunday, but she can't do it alone! Please consider joining Ms. Joanne in the nursery for a few hours some Sunday in the near future, and give the gift of a break to the parents who usually fulfill this requirement. There is a nursery volunteer sign-up sheet on the CHUMC Service Station bulletin board located outside the church office.

CHUMC Covenant Care Program

Covenant care is care for one another, and the CHUMC Covenant Care program helps us organized various care efforts. The program includes a telephone prayer chain, visits to home or hospital, cards and calls of support, arranging transportation, and making food deliveries. If you would like assistance or would like be notified when needs for care arise in our community, contact Sue Marullo or Pastor Ginger Gaines-Cirelli.

Tip: Also check out the article about this program in the April issue of Heartbeat on the Hill (pdf).

Café Capitol Hill

Café Capitol Hill is a fellowship meal served on the third Sunday of each month to our homeless neighbors on the Hill.

(Check the event calendar for exact dates)

The Café can always use your helping hand. Just meet the group downstairs from about 12:15 to 1:30pm to help serve our guests and clean up the kitchen afterwards.

For more information, please contact teamoutreach@googlegroups.com.

Bring in miniature toiletries for Café Capitol Hill. Miniature toiletries are welcome gifts for the guests of Café Capitol Hill. You can leave the items in the labeled box in the hallway outside the church office. Thank you!

Regular Opportunities related to Sunday Worship

Consider serving as a Sunday Morning Worship Assistant. Sunday Morning Assistants are a vital part of congregational life at CHUMC. While the tasks may differ, all assistants have an opportunity to show hospitality to those who enter this House of God. Below is a brief description of each worship assistant position.

Greeters
Greeters welcome worshipers in the sanctuary and orient people to the nursery, restrooms, coat racks, etc.

Ushers
Ushers help in a variety of ways before, during and after service. Tasks include, but are not limited to, handing out bulletins, answering questions, welcoming worshipers, collecting the offering, serving as acolyte and/or crucifer, and organizing the sanctuary for worship.

Counters
Counters gather the offering after service, count, record and deposit the gifts received.

Fellowship Hosts
Hosts prepare, serve refreshments and clean-up the fellowship gathering that happens in the Parlor immediately follows worship service. Hosts also greet and welcome worshipers to the fellowship time.

Unit Manager
Unit Managers have many tasks, including opening the church at 9:30, coordinating the other Sunday Morning Assistants, and serving as an usher.

Liturgists
The liturgist participates directly in the worship service by reading prayers and scripture. The liturgist may also greet worshipers as they leave the sanctuary at the conclusion of the service.

Interested in serving as a CHUMC Sunday Morning Worship Assistant? Contact Kirsten Gullickson or Pastor Ginger or sign up at the CHUMC service station bulletin board outside the church office.

Join the Choir

You know who you are. You're just itching to be part of the music on Sunday mornings. All you have to do is come to the choir room downstairs at 9:45 on Sunday morning. You can even come and learn the anthem for that day during the rehearsal. Think you're not good enough? Think again!

Brighten up the Church in Honor or Remembrance

Honor or remember a loved one by providing funding for a flower arrangement, tower lighting or window lighting. Simply print and fill out this form (PDF*) and send it to the church with your check or call the church office at (202) 546-1000 to call in your order.

The cost of a flower dedication is $25; the window or tower can be illuminated for $15.

Be the heart and hands of God in the community...
