Official Welcoming Statement for Capitol Hill United Methodist Church

Capitol Hill United Methodist Church is called to the ministry of reconciliation. We embrace as a gift the diversity of our neighborhood and the world. We celebrate our human family's diversity of sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ethnicity, age, faith history, economic status, marital status, physical and mental ability, and education. We affirm that all people are created in the image of God and as beloved children of God, all are worthy of God's love and grace. We welcome the full inclusion of all people in the life and ministries of Capitol Hill United Methodist Church as we journey toward reconciliation through Christ. We recognize that there are differences among us, but believe that we can love alike even though we may not think alike. We proclaim this statement of welcome to all who have known the pain of exlusion or discrimination in the church or in society. We invite all people to join us in our faith journey toward greater love, understanding, and mutual respect.

The Reconciling Process at Capitol Hill UMC

The reconciling process at Capitol Hill UMC, which was lead by a Reconciling Community Working Group, had been going on for about six years when in early 2005 the church decided it was time to reach a community-wide decision regarding this issue.

For more information, please read the February 14 letter to CHUMC members and friends by Pastor Ginger Gaines-Cirelli.

Part of the Reconciling Community Process was a series of events to help church members and friends learn more about the issue and discuss the different viewpoints and ways to go ahead. While the activities are over, you can still download the 2005 CHUM Reconciling Community Process calendar of activities to see the types of activities the church organized as part of this process.

Online Resources

Many websites address the issues of homosexuality and the reconciling process within the United Methodist Church. The links below are a place to start learning more about the topic.

The Reconciling Ministries Network
The Reconciling Ministries Network is "a national grassroots organization that exists to enable full participation of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities in the life of the United Methodist Church, both in policy and practice."
Of particular interest on this website are its resources section, which includes the above mentioned answers to commonly asked questions (pdf), and its
bibliography page.

www.abouthomosexuality.com
A site about....homosexuality. From its home page: "This website contains a wealth of information and well-reasoned thought for people who are trying to understand homosexuality--something that's not easy to do. If you're here for the first time, congratulations. You're taking an important step."

Evangelicals Concerned (EC): Frequently Asked Questions
EC is a "non-denominational community that is a safe place for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Christians to reconcile and integrate their faith and sexuality." Learn more about the organization and its quest for spiritual growth for all who are on their journey of faith.

And God Loves Each One
A website around a booklet about sexual orientation. Its author, Ann Thompson Cook, has been educating people about sexuality, reproductive health, and gender for 25 years. The site's resources section has many links to print resources and organizations.
