"History of Camp Loy White" |
Camp Loy White is named after a young man who died at the age of 16 in June 1961 in an automobile accident.    His family donated land and money to establish a camp in the Gastonia District. The Gastonia District Camp became a reality when the District Conference met in special session on May 6, 1962, voting to authorize the acceptance of a gift of money and land offered to the Gastonia District for the purpose of creating a District Camp. Mr. & Mrs. James W. White donated land and funds in memory of their son, Loy E. White. Other donations of land were made by Mrs. Mary Beth Brackett Craver, Mrs. R. C. White, Ed White, Miss Selma White, Mrs. Murriel Murry and Mrs. Mable Kroll.     In 1963, some land was purchased to bring the total acreage to 117.19.        Another called session of the Gastonia District Conference was held in May 1964 to authorize the District Trustees to borrow sufficient funds to build a lodge on campus. A five-acre lake was constructed in 1964.     In May 1965, the Wesley Lodge was completed.   Over the years, improvements have been made from time to time.
In 1981, a Task Force was set in action to study Camp Loy White and its development. This task force came up with the recommendation for improvement of facilities and securing of a person to manage and direct the program.   In December 1983 the Camp Committee voted to employ a full-time director.           In 1984 the Asbury Lodge was built, and, in 1985 the Swimming Pool was constructed.           In a meeting of the Gastonia District Trustees on August 29, 1989, a motion was made and passed unanimously to proceed with the construction of an Administrator's Residence at a total cost of $83,071.00.           A "Futuring Committee" has recently given us a plan for the next five years. |
