Trip Back to the Past
"The
following was published in the Huntingdon Daily on Sept. 28 1956:
The
eighth annual homecoming of the Woodvale Methodist Church of Wood will be held
on Sunday, October 14, beginning at 11am, the Rev. Rodney Yates, pastor, announced
today.
Assisting the pastor
with the morning worship service will be the Rev. Earl Hess, formerly of the Broad
Top area. Rev. Hess will deliver the sermon and there will be special music for
the service.
The committee in
charge of planning the event has arranged for prizes to be given the person attending
from the farthest distance, for the youngest child and for the oldest person present.
Charles
Bolinger of York, a former member of the congregation, will give a history of
the Woodvale Church at the afternoon session. Special music for the afternoon
program will be provided by the Winfield Brothers, the Guinnes Sisters, Miss Doyle
of Robertsdale and OrvisWagner of Broad Top City. Accompanist will be Mrs.Adam
Black, Pianist, of Broad Top.
Former
pastors, members and friends of the church are invited to attend the celebration
and the dinner in the social room of the church to be served by members of the
Womans society of Christian Service."
The
first records of the church for the congregation was in the old school house heated
by a pot bellied stove. Mr. John Duvall was the leader of these meetings. A new
building was constructed in 1911. An addition was built on to the original building
in 1924-1925 and the church services were held in the new addition. The older
room was used for Sunday school classes. Through the years many improvements have
been made, but it has not lost the old much loved look of the original church
built in 1911.
Although
we are small our Mission Field is large and we accept the challenge to spread
the Good News to all who wish to hear.
We
still have a Youth Sunday school each Sunday morning at 10:15am an a Adult at
the same time. Although we are not growing at the same rate as the big churches,
we are growing. We try to have activities for the Adults/Childern as often as
we can and have enjoyed joining with other churches in the area for joint choir
and activities. Our own charge choir, although small, still practices once a week,
and sings most Sundays.
The
family at Wood invite you to join us in prayer for the sick and impaired, for
our troops all over the world and to our Nation as a whole, and remember the

A
PRAYER FOR OUR PASTOR
Lord,
we lift up the hands of our pastor and her family. Pleace them in the shelter
of the Most High to rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
We
will say of the Lord, You are their refuge and fortress. You will preserve their
family time. You will cover their home. Your faithfulness will meet their financial
needs in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:19)
You
will command your angels to guard them as they travel and win the lost. You have
said, "I will be with [them] in trouble, I will deliver [them] and honor
[them]. With a long life, I will satisfy [them]. and show [them] my salvation
God gave human beings tremendous
authority - to be in charge o0f the whole earth. But with great authority comes
great responsiblity. If we own a pet, we have the legal authority to do withy
it as we wish, but we also have the responsibiity to feed and care for it.; How
do you treat God's creation? Use your resources wi9sely bedcause God holds you
accountable as stewards...Commentary on Psalm 8:6
