LOCAL CHURCH SPOTLIGHT |
Dungannon UMC |
| God is alive and well
in Dungannon VA. Over the years the little town
of Dungannon has had a reputation for being a rough
and sometimes wild place. In its early years as
a railroad town it had it’s share of drifters and
hobos who mixed with some locals to create some
very stormy nights.
Weekends typically began with the shooting out
of the street lights and then the ruckus would
begin. As the sun came up on any given Sunday
morning damage to property and human life could
be assessed. Law abiding residents often wondered
if God was alive in Dungannon.
Times have changed and that was quite apparent on
the evening of Saturday, 09/01/07 on Main Street.
It was there, on a grassy field, in the heat of
the late summer, that some nearly 200 local residents
(men, women, and children) met for Dungannon’s first
annual Block Party and School Supply Give Away.
The event was organized by the three local Protestant
Churches in the community (United Methodist, Baptist
and Free Will Baptist) and sponsored Middlebrook
Pike Baptist Church of Knoxville TN in conjunction
with the Youth Race Organization.
The event hosted Gospel singing, preaching of God’s
word and spiritual dance and drama. God was at work
in the crowd that evening as several people made
a commitment to Christ and promised to change their
lives.
Over the past year the churches
in Dungannon have made a concerted effort to work
together for the good of the entire community.
They have met as one body several occasions and
have plans to continue. Plans are being made for
other joint activities.
