United Methodist Men

Purpose

United Methodist Men shall be a creative, supportive fellowship of men who seek to know Jesus Christ, to grow spiritually, and to seek daily his will.

Our primary purpose is to declare the centrality of Christ in the lives of men and in all their relationships.

Meetings

The UMM meet at the church each third Tuesday with a meal and program beginning at 6 p.m. We hope all men of the church will join us.

On Wednesday mornings, our pastor and retired men in the UMM meet for breakfast at a cafe. Afterward, several of them sometimes go to the church to set up tables and chairs for meals or tables for the bell choir. They do minor repair work, etc.

Meeting: October 20, 2009 at 6:00 Potluck dinner in fellowship hall
followed by Guney Gul's presentation on his conversion from Islam to Christianity. This will be an open meeting to all members and others that would be interested. Guney Gul will be our guest speaker for the night. Guney was born in Turkey and was a practicing Muslim until he converted to Christianity in 1996. Soon after he became an ordained minister. His conversion caused quite an upheavel in his life as he was excommunicated by his family and society, even receiving death threats. Through faith he retained his beliefs and accepted his sufferings. he plans to tell some of his story and then have plenty of time for a question and answer session. Please make plans to attend and bring a friend. Children are welcome but there will be no child care provided in the nursery. we apologize for the inconvenience. This is a potluck dinner so please plan on bringing your favorite dish to share.

Service to our Church Members

UMM does clean-up, repair, and other activities.

The second weekend of December is going to be a busy week for our ministry. United Methodist Men voted to organize and host our Annual Christmas Caroling activity on December 11, 2009 at 6:30. This was an extremely successful event last year and we hope to make it just as successful this year. We need someone to arrive early and prepare hot chocolate for the event. Hopefully Beau can lead us last year in warming up our voices. Would anyone like to read the Christmas Story from the Bible this year. jim Vogel did an awesome job last year. Finally we need people to bring refreshments. If you feel called to help please email Britt so I can add you to the list.

Last year we also provided chili for the children's musical. We have decided to support this event again which is scheduled for December 13, 2009 at 600. Ross Smith headed this event up last year and did a phenominal job. He has volunteered to do head it up again! Please email Ross or myself if you are interested in providing a pot of chili for this event. Remember no celery. We will also need people to serve and cleanup. Thank you Ross for stepping up and leading this event.

UMM Serves as Sponsors for New Boy Scout Troop
The first Boy Scout in the area was associated with this church in the past and had as many as 100 members during the years that Ben Ramsey and Buck Price were Scout Masters.
The Miller Building was originally created for the Boy Scout activities, and our boys and their leaders travelled over the nation attending Jamborees and other scouting events over the years.
It will be good to gave an active troop again to give extension to the splendid Cub Scout movement that was begun some years ago.

"First Annual" Enchanted Evening (Enjoyment and Entrancement)
The youth and the Methodist Men of Brunswick First let all the stops out and provided about a hundred guests an evening full of entertainment on Saturday, February 7th in the fellowship hall of the church.
The hall was cleverly and beautifully decorated with balloons, flowers and low lights giving an atmosphere for delightful dining and surprisingly good entertainment.
The energetic youth did marvelous jobs making everyone feel welcome and serving the full four course meal to the happy guests.
Chef Hollington and his selected assistants prepared the gourmet dinner that consisted of a tasty Caprisi salad, a bowl of hearty Leek and Lentel Soup, and an entree of delectable, mouth watering Five Cheese Lasagna with Steamed Vegetables. Dessert consisted of Raspberry Sorbet with Sopapias.
Brother Richard served as master of ceremonies for the evening. He kept the diners laughing with his bits of humor, and he introduced the many artists who sang and entertained the appreciative crowd.
George Ingram and Mark Howell each sang familiar ballads and both sang together the theme song of the evening, "Some Enchanted Evening." The United Methodist Men's Chorus wowed the audience with a great rendition of "Strangers in the Night." Three of the men wearing sailor costumes sang "There’s Nothing Like a Dame" that brought thunderous applause from the diners.
Donna Nilsson and George Ingram provided soft piano music during the dinner hour. Neil Nilsson worked in the background controlling the lights and sound all evening. He also was one of the sailors in the trio and was wearing the hat he had in the Navy a bunch of years ago. A group, calling themselves "The Beatles," sang a tender rendition of the popular song, "I Wanta Hold Your Hand."
Room doesn’t allow naming every person who helped make The Enchanted Evening a great success, but a great big high five goes to Britt Trevathan and each and everyone who made the affair a memorable one!

Outreach

soldier kneelingHero's Sendoff Parade On April 10, 2009, our community enthusiastically responded to the UMM's invitation to join us in giving a hero's sendoff to the soldiers of G/148th Infantry Brigade of the Georgia Army National Guard from Norwich Street before they were deployed to Afghanistan.

At 10:30 a.m. the soldiers marched from Mary Ross Waterfront Park to city hall for a small ceremony and then marched to First United Methodist Church where our church provided a dinner and the option for Communion before they were deployed two days later.

This was a community effort hosted by Brunswick Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce, First United Methodist Church, Southern Soul Bar-B-Q, and Grandy's Restaurant. Families of the service men and women joined them for the delicious meal and Communnion.
