This award, given by the WNCC Commission on Mission/Outreach, honors outstanding lay persons with a life-long commitment to missions and exemplary service in outreach ministries to God and humanity throughout the world.

HELP US REACH OUT!

Brookstown’s Community Festival is coming up—only three months away, on October 18th.  The plans are coming along, too, but the Festival Committee needs your help.

Everyone in the church can play a part.

What can you do?

  • Pray for warm hearts, smooth operation and great weather!
  • Volunteer to fill a position.  Doris Biddix (922-0531, dbiddix@triad.rr.com) is our Volunteer Coordinator, and would be glad to point you in the direction of a position that needs filling.

  • Plan to make something for our Country Store.  Delve into your own talents for this one:  knitted scarves, canned green beans, greeting cards, pot holders, bird houses, etc.  Fill out your “intentions” card when it comes.
  • Bring in Mason jars for others to fill with delectables.  The storage closet across from the ladies’ room in front of the Fellowship Hall is the gathering place.

  • Plan to make a frozen casserole to sell.
  • Look through your recipes for a baked goodie for Aunt B’s Bakery.

  • Help at a Chicken Pie Workshop.
  • Get some quilt tickets from Rowena Gilstrap or from the church office, and find people willing to make donations.

  • Invite people to come! It’s not a Community Festival without the community!
  •

Please contact Tim Lasley (945-6577, tjlasley@aol.com) or

Susan Jameson (946-2878, svjameson@msn.com)

with ideas, comments or questions.

THANK YOU for your help!

NEWS from BROOKSTOWN SCHOOL

AND SUMMER CARE

We got off to a great start in June.  The summer program is at full capacity and we are busy, busy, busy!

We have already been skating, playing video games and have smelled the roses at Reynolda Gardens.  We’re looking forward to going swimming, playing miniature golf and going to Cici’s for pizza.

When not gallivanting all over town, we keep busy playing outside, creating with Legos, and playing games like Jenga and Pictureha.  Come and visit us - we’re having a great time!

WE EXTEND OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY to

and to Troy and Teresa Apperson and their family following the death of Teresa’s mother, Mary McEwen, on June 1.

OUR NEW PARSONAGE

On June 18, 2008 Brookstown bought a new parsonage!  Congratulations to everyone who participated in the challenging effort to purchase the home prior to the deadline.  Now that we own the parsonage, everyone should know the terms for the cost and financing.

Brookstown bought the parsonage for $230,000.  The property’s assessed value was $235,000.  The settlement costs paid by Brookstown were $4,039.94.  $102,000 from the sale of the old parsonage was applied to the purchase price.  The settlement costs were paid out of existing funds from the Parsonage Account.  Brookstown secured a variable rate loan from the United Methodist Foundation in the amount of $128,000.  The interest rate is 5% and adjusts quarterly.  Principal and interest is due monthly for 15 years.  The monthly payment is $1,012.22.

The Stewardship Committee will soon be organizing a Capital Campaign seeking pledges to pay off the loan.  If we all pull together, we can pay in full the debt long before the maturity date of July 1, 2023.

Paul wrote in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.”  We now have an opportunity to come together and take action to help the future of our church.  It is a time where we also can draw strength from each other, and provide testimony to the power of Christ in our lives and community.

John Jameson,

Chairman of Finance Committee

Dear Brookstown family,

You are the greatest and we love you so much!  During my recent surgeries your thoughts, prayers, cards, emails and love have sustained Betty and me during some very difficult times.  There is so much love in our church and we are so fortunate to have you as a part of our extended family. Your cakes, banana puddings, cookies, meals, get-well cards, love, and expressions of concern have “almost” made it fun to be sick!  That could only happen at Brookstown!

A special thanks to Roland Barnhardt, who has been at our side during the surgeries.  We are grateful to him for his counseling, much love and prayers.  It was much easier with him there.

We have a ways to go yet and I beg you to be patient with my squeaky voice – as I know you will.  God has blessed me with a wonderful church family, an awesome pastor and a cancer that has a very high cure rate.  And, for all of that I am very thankful. We love you.

Dear Brookstown Friends,

Thank you for the wonderful fellowship meal, framed picture of the church, gift certificate and personal notes you gave us on June 22. We will cherish these mementos of the past four years we shared in meaningful ways with you.

May God continue to bless you with the gifts and graces of his Kingdom as you let the light of Christ shine forth in everything you do!

Roland Barnhardt

Dear Brookstown Friends,

Thank you for all your calls and cards following the death of my mother.    Your kind words and prayers have brought us much comfort.  While saddened by our loss, through faith we anticipate our reunion in Christ's kingdom.

Robin Neely

Summer is officially here and many of us will be away on vacations during the coming months.  While we are away, the Church still has bills to pay.  Please make every effort to contribute your financial gifts during this time when contributions typically are slow.  Our cash reserve no longer allows us to wait until the fall to catch up the deficit we create in the summer.  It is important that our financial contributions continue during the summer months.

    BIBLE KNOWLEDGE

 Answers for June

1  Where in the New Testament is the coming of the Holy Spirit? Acts 2:1-41

2  What is the name of the event when the Holy Spirit arrived? Pentecost – Acts 2:1

3.How did the Holy Spirit arrive? “… a violent wind” and “…seemed to be tongues of fire…”  Acts 2:2-4

4. Which of the twelve apostles gave the first sermon after receiving the Holy Spirit?

Peter – Acts 2:14-41

5. How many were saved and baptized after hearing the first sermon?

“About three thousand…”  Acts 2:41

6. Which apostle performed the first healing/miracle?  Peter – Acts 3:1-10

7. Who was chosen to replace Judas Iscariot?  Matthias – Acts 1:26 (the whole story is Acts 1:12-26)

8. How many days after Jesus’ resurrection was His ascension?  40 – Acts 1:3

9. How many days after Jesus’ resurrection was Pentecost? 50 – No  scripture actually states this; you have to do the math.  The Feast of Weeks was celebrated fifty (pente) days after Passover (Leviticus 23:4-22)

10,How many days after Jesus’ ascension was Pentecost? 10 – Again, you have to do the math.  Acts 1:3 tells us that Jesus “appeared to them over a period of forty days…”That is forty days after His resurrection during the Passover Feast, so 40 + 10 = 50.

LAY LEADER LINKS

Grace and Peace to all from our risen Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen!

I am dedicating this “link” to welcoming our new minister and his family home!

To Pastor Chip and wife Kathy and daughters Katherine, Kirsten, and Kelsey Grace, we thank God for sending you to all of us at Brookstown.  We look forward with great hope and excitement as we begin a new chapter in the ongoing ministry of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at Brookstown.

Home is the place where we live and work.  We eat, sleep, and grow our families from home.  Chores are performed to keep our home in good shape.  Home is a shelter from the weather, keeping us warm and dry.  Home is made of natural and man-made materials such as stone, wood, and brick.  Home is where relationships are formed and biblical truths and values are taught to last a lifetime.  Home is a refuge, a place we can feel safe and secure.  Home is where love lives.  Our home is a sanctuary, a place declared holy by God and set apart for worshipping Him.  Agape lives in our home.

Pastor Chip, Kathy, Kathryn, Kirsten, and Kelsey Grace, we are privileged and honored to have you all as a part of the Brookstown family and home.  Also, I want to reiterate that we eagerly accept our responsibility in the ministry covenant God has ordained.  Together in Christ’s love and the leading of the Holy Spirit, we truly “can do all things.”

Psalm 118:29 shouts “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.”  Again, we thank God for His unending love in sending you all to all of us.

Welcome home!!

Grace and Peace,

Wayne Biddix, Servant
