BEACON
BITS: Past Tense, Future Perfect
Roland
Barnhardt
After
the resurrection, Jesus went to His disciples.
First,
He calmed the storms raging in their hearts:
“Peace
be with you.”
Next,
He gave them what they needed to carry on God’s work:
“Receive
the Holy Spirit.”
Then
He instructed them:
“If
you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven …”
“Do
not doubt, but believe.”
In
a sense, Jesus’ work was finished. His
disciples’ work was just beginning. What
encouragement He gave them!
It
reminds me of the encouragement for daily living in an article I recently read:
“Finish
each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and
absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a
new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered
with your old nonsense. Ralph Waldo Emerson
“Have
you ever noticed how many people carry the past with them everywhere they go?
For some it becomes their badge of honor, for others a wound in need of
constant tending, and for others still, a prison sentence for which there is no
appeal.
“Life
was never meant to be lived in past tense. It is meant to be met head-on and
embraced like a loved one in the ever present NOW. In this way, one
well-attended moment follows the next, creating a future that is divinely rich
and complete. Yesterday is past tense. Tomorrow is placed in future perfect
tense by spending time in today.”
These
are good thoughts that should serve us Easter people well.

Any questions or comments
please e-mail or call me at waynebiddix@triad.rr.com or 922-0531.
Do you know
that Brookstown has a phone prayer chain? The purpose of the chain is
to let folks know that there is a need for prayer for certain individuals or
situations.
The first person on the list
calls the next one with a name or situation.
Then that person calls the next one on the list until everyone is
notified.. Each
individual then offers a prayer for the situation or name given.
If you would like your name
added to the Prayer Chain, please call the church office and specify either
daytime group or evening group. If
someone is interested in an e-mail prayer chain, please let the church
office know that, too.
Thank you. If you have questions, call Kay in the church
office.
YOUTH NEWS Benita
VanWinkle
God is so good – and once
again I am overwhelmed and proud of our youth.
For our Lenten season, the youth ‘experienced’ what it means to be on
the path with Jesus, from the last supper to the vinegar to the cross and then
looking skyward. Please stop by the
youth room to see our cross. (Thank you,
Destination Unknown is April 6. Ask one of the youth
about this special experience after we return.
We will also attend a special event at Faith United Methodist featuring
Andy Lambert on April 13.
Signs of Spring are
motivating us all to be outside, so feel free to join the youth group as they ‘spruce
up’ our church with our mission work for April, starting right here on the
grounds of Brookstown. We will be
spreading mulch, planting flowers, and other spring cleaning on April 12 from
9:00-12:00. (And then there is lunch, of
course!)
As we continue to raise
money for our mission trip, the youth are selling ‘Buy one, get one FREE” Krispy
Kreme cards at $12. There is no expiration date on the cards, so even if
the diet is limiting now, you could use it later! Thanks to Rene Galyean for getting those! We are also selling “Danny Duzit”
stainless steel sponges – the best kitchen helper ever- so please ask us about
purchasing one or two, or three of these as well. (Emilie says they are the best!)
This month the youth will be
serving dinner to the
If you see birdhouses or
paintbrushes about, just know that the youth are participating in Birdfest, the largest fundraiser of
the year for Habitat for Humanity. Not only are our youth getting birdhouses
ready for our ‘tweet’ friends, they will be helping with the actual Birdfest event on May 4. If you would like to donate artwork of any
kind (knitting, woodworking, ceramics, painting, photography) the dates to turn
in work are April 17-19. Please see
Benita for more details, or visit www.habitatforsyth.org.
We are looking for art
supplies that we could take on our mission trip. Part of the work will be a ‘kids club’ and
our experience has been that we always need more art supplies. We are having a HUGE (with your help!) YARD
SALE and BBQ
THANK YOU,
Benita
