Memories Are So Beautiful I Have So Many!

One day I was calling in our community and found a little boy who needed kindergarten. His mother said, "I would love for him to go, but he has no clothes better than what he has on."

I said, "If I can find clothes, would you let him come?"

"Oh, yes."

I found the clothes, three complete sets, shoes and socks. Joy filled their hearts when they saw what we had. I said, "All you do is keep them clean, and be there every day."

The next morning he arrived and looked as if he had been waxed and polished. He walked and looked around, amazed. During the morning I gave them story books to look at. Mickey got the prettiest one. He went off by himself, lay down on the floor and leafed through the book. Suddenly it was, "God dang; did you ever see anything so pretty!" No, I did not correct him; he had seen beauty. Kindergarten would take care of the word.

The days passed, and Mickey grew and grew–a whole new world had opened.

On the closing day the house was full for a closing program. Mickey’s parents were there, beaming.

After the program was over, the mother said, "Mickey has come home each day and made us learn the songs, and told us the stories–and we loved it."

I said, "Mrs. Green, I couldn’t have done anything if the Lord and United Methodist Women had not provided our McCarty Settlement House."

She said, "Our home is better. Mickey is happy. You tell those women I said thanks, for kindergarten has been a blessing to all of us, and we can all talk to the Lord." --Helen Carter
