Jane
Stentz
Several of us have known Jane
Stentz since we studied with her at Scarritt College during one
of her years there, but all of us welcome her to Brooks-Howell.
Her family moved around a lot, as her father worked in business
administration and also was the first manager and announcer at
Ashevilles radio station WWNC. That was the year she was
six when they lived just off Merrimon Avenue, and she was
enrolled in Claxton School. Only one of their moves took them out
of western North Carolina, to Los Angeles, where Mr. Stentz
served as business and radio technician manager at a Methodist
Church. They lived in Waynesville, North Carolina during her high
school and early college years. She has an A.A. degree from
Virginia Intermont College, B.A. and M.A. from Scarritt, and a
M.Ed. from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida.
Following her Scarritt graduation in 1949 she taught for three
years at Leonard Theological College in Jabalpur, India, as a
short-term missionary. She is a Certified Director of Christian
Education, a commissioned Deaconess, a consecrated Lay Worker, a
Diaconal Minister, and has trained in other fields. Her career
has included positions with the General Boards of Mission and of
Education. She moved to Florida in 1964, serving in student and
local church positions in Tallahassee and Boca Raton. She retired
in Boca Raton in 1984 and continued to do volunteer work in the
community.
"The Lake" (Junaluska) has always been a special place
for her family. Her father, Jeptha Dale Stentz, and her mother
(Mary Stuart Stentz) lived there. Her grandfather (Dr. George R.
Stuart) was one of the founders of the Assembly, and the
auditorium was dedicated to him. Her father was the first
Director of the Assembly. When she was introduced in our chapel
service, she stood up and said, "Im
homehurrah!" We decided she is a happy member of our
family, situated near "the Lake" she loves.
