Water Projects Supported By

“Bridge Of Love

The image of a woman walking several miles each day to secure water was the motive to help both conferences in Angola desperately needing water wells. This project of the Board of Lay Ministry of the Rocky Mountain Conference provided funds through special collections at Annual Conference sessions. With the recommendation of the staff in both the East and West Conferences along with each bishop more than $18,000 has been sent for major water projects. Bishop Jose Quipungo of the East Angola Annual Conference shared the immediate need to restore the water system destroyed at the former mission station of Quessua.

He writes, “the need for a water supply is a high priority because we expect 250 students to attend the primary and secondary schools along with the Theological School. It is so important to have water for the students, professors and workers.” Fresh spring water will be taken from the Quessua mountain and sent several kilometers through new pipes and stored in containers for use of all those attending schools that have been rebuilt after many years of civil war. Antonio Sozinho, the staff person in the West Angola Annual Conference, explains the project at Sessa, a village in the Bula Atumba region. He shares that first they hoped to dig a well for the village. After studying the situation it was discovered the water table was over 200 meters below the surface. An alternative was discovered. A water fall from a locality near by could be used.

The funds from the “Bridge of Love” will make it possible to construct a tank for collecting the water and then a small water pump would send the water to the village using pipes. “Following the star” has made dreams a reality for the people in Angola. Thanks to the generous effort of the Rocky Mountain Conference, the villages, schools and other institutions of the Angola United Methodist Church will be able to have fresh water so vital for growing communities and churches. From the gospel of Matthew we read, “I was thirsty and you gave me a drink”. The gospel is being lived out for the people in Angola.
