WHAT DREAMS INDEED!
The movie, 'What Dreams May Come', starring Robin Williams is visually a wonder & creatively very thought provoking. The main theme is a classic; the rescue of a loved one. In contrast to most films, all the main characters die early in the film.
In this film, the rescue is from Hell. Robin Williams's character loses his son & daughter in a car accident. He & his wife attempt to deal with their grief for the children. His wife, a very accomplished oil painter, is suicidal. Robin's character is killed while attempting to help at a car accident.
He explores his heaven after death in a wonderful exuberance of computerized visual creations & enhancements in an oil painting world theme. He explores a world of colors and fantastically beautiful landscapes in the theme of his wife's paintings. He learns later that his wife has committed suicide.
Unfortunately, people who commit suicide create their own hellish existence after death. Robin's character is determined to rescue his wife from an eternity of despair & depression. He sets off on a guided quest to find his wife and bring her back to heaven.
To enjoy this movie fully, you should resist the impulse to judge if everything is theologically correct. Enjoy instead the visual treats presented by means of computer-generated images and the inspiration of a man risking the loss of an eternity in Heaven in order to try to save his love from an eternity of hopelessness.
Greater Love has no man....
