At Bethel, youth are important! Special programs are offered which give youth the opportunity to have fun, socialize and learn more about being a Christian. (Read the “Youth Yak” Newsletter.)
UMYF The United Methodist Youth Fellowship is divided into two groups: Junior UMYF and Senior UMYF. Regular meetings are held each Sunday night. The program includes refreshments, and programs such as Bible study, discussion of topics that affect youth, and service-oriented projects. Extracurricular outings such as skating, swimming, visiting shut-ins and novel experiences outside the church are planned throughout the year.
Missions The youth and children of Bethel are involved in various mission projects throughout the year such as food drives for Harvest Hope Food Bank, collecting and sending funds to the United Methodist Children's Ministry, collecting and packing for the Shoebox Ministry, collecting for the Souper Bowl campaign against hunger, Conference Youth Service Fund for Missions, attending a Salkehatchie summer work camp, collecting school supplies for the Cooperative Ministry, and others.
Puppet and Clown Ministry Bethel youth have an active Puppet Theater group and also perform as clowns and mimes. They plan and provide programs for the Easter Egg Hunt, Neighborhood Picnic, Ice Cream Socials, Family Night Suppers, and Vacation Bible School..
Retreats Youth have an opportunity to attend Conference Spiritual Life Retreats each year. There are also opportunities for retreats to the ski slopes, mountains, beach, etc.
Summer Activities During the summer months, youth and children are invited to participate in varied activities planned by Bethel's Director of Children and Youth. Most either attend or help with Vacation Bible School. Several from Bethel attend summer camp at Asbury Hills United Methodist Camp. The conference also provides a Leadership Training Camp and other special conferences for youth. Salkehatchie provides a summer opportunity for service.
Special Choirs The Cherub Choir, composed of children 3 to 5 years of age, gives special presentations throughout the year. The Children’s Choir is composed of elementary age children from 1st through 5th grades. They also give special presentations throughout the year.
Other Children’s Programs and Activities Other Children’s programs include a Children’s Sermon during the Sunday morning worship service, and then the children leave the Sanctuary to attend Children’s Church. A Nursery is provided for the very young also.
In addition to participating in Thanksgiving and Christmas programs, the children are treated to a Spring Fling (with Easter baskets, games, etc.) and a Fall Fling party where they can wear Halloween costumes if they choose.
