Pay Attention !

“Pay attention and learn good judgment…My Child, pay attention to what I say.  Listen carefully to my words”  (Proverbs 4:1, 20)

Life is amazing.  It is rich and inspiring beyond our wildest imaginations, but we have to pay attention.  We get so wrapped up in our busy lives and “to so” lists that we forget to STOP and notice the world around us.  Are you paying attention to your family life?

·        Eat dinner together:   A wonderful time to share and learn about each other

·        Have “family” night:  Play interactive games, review upcoming events, review what your family priorities are.

·        Don’t over schedule !!  Maybe limiting outside activities is in order.

·        One on One with each child:  Maybe a lunch out, make cookies, etc.

·        Limit screen time, both TV & computer games, etc.

And what about your greater families?

·        Stay connected with extended families. Phone, e-mail, family blog, plan an event.

·        Make your spiritual life a priority, attend church, join in the activities, network.

February is Heart Month.  You know the drill:  Proper diet.  Regular exercise.  Reduce stress in your life – at home,  at work.  Start small, just one new effort a week.  For example:  Stop putting butter on your toast, try jelly only.  Walk an extra flight of steps each day.  Take 5 minutes to meditate.  Then gradually increase your efforts.  Look at your community resources for additional help, local newspaper, flyers from hospitals, call the county Health Department, etc.

March is Nutrition and Poison Prevention Month.  We have looked at nutrition several times.  Look all around for ways to better nourish your body, magazines, community resources, increase fruits and vegetables to 5 or more servings per day.

Poison Prevention:  Poison control number in our area is at Children’s Hospital in Phila. and is 1-800-222-1222.  Make sure that everyone in your family know how and when to use that number.  You will also need to know the child’s age, weight. What was swallowed, inhaled or was in contact with the skin.  Keep Syrup of Ipecac  in your medicine cabinet, (which is out of reach of your child, of course) and use only as directed.  Don’t forget safe, out of reach storage for medicines, laundry items and cleaning supplies.
