Flu & Flu Shots Information:
- What is Influenza?
Infuenza (the flu) is a viral infection of the nose, throat, bronchial tubes, and lungs that can make someone of any age ill. Usually the flu occurs in the US from about November to April. If you get the flu, you usually have fever, chills, cough, and soreness and achiness in your back, arms and legs. People with the flu are usually bedridden for a few days, although some persons become much more seriously ill and may need hospitalization. Death can occur from the flu and related complications.
- About the Flu Shot? Each year, there is a new strain of the flu, so you must be vaccinated each year to be protected. You will receive protection against the flu virus most likely to be circulating this season. Seventy percent of all people who receive a flu vaccine are completely protected. The remaining thirty percent have partial protection and will have greatly lessened symptoms if they do contract influenza. The vaccine begins to provide protection approximately 1 to 2 weeks after the shot is given. The shot will not protect you against other illnesses that resemble the flu. 2000/2001 strains are: A-Moscow; A-New Caledonia; B-Beijing.
