Focus On Our Children

What Every Parent Should Remember

1.  Children thrive best in an atmosphere of genuine love undergirded by reasonable consistent discipline.

2.  Children only learn what they are taught.

3.  The footsteps a child follows are most likely to be the ones his parents thought they covered up.

4.  Praise and criticism at home should be distributed as evenly as possible.

5.  It is through loving control that parents express personal worth to a child.

6.  If you never allow a child to want something they will never enjoy the pleasure of receiving it.

7.  There are so many necessary "no"s in a child's life that we should say "yes" whenever we can.

8.  Grandparents can be invaluable to the world of little people. They may be the only grown-ups that have time.

9.  Trying to control children by yelling is as utterly futile as trying to steer a car by honking the horn.

10.  Loving discipline encourages a child to respect other people and life as a responsible, constructive citizen.

Safety with Fireworks

S  Sparks and embers from fireworks can start a fire; have a bucket of water nearby.

A  Always light fireworks one at a time.

F  Fireworks should be stored in a cool, dry place. (Don't carry them in your pocket.)

E  Educate children that fireworks are explosive devices.

F  Fireworks should not be discharged in neighborhood yards or crowded areas.

I  If you use a lighter, make sure it has a child resistant feature.

R  Recognize fireworks are a dangerous activity; do not drink and fire!

E  Extinguish "duds" in a bucket of water; do not try to relight.

W  Without exception, do not make your own fireworks.

O  Obtain fireworks from a reputable dealer.

R  Responsible adults should always supervise.

K  Keep matches away from children.

S  Small children should not handle fireworks.
