| worship services | Berwick United Methodist Church |
Our mission is to serve God by serving our community, as we have done since 1810. Our community includes not only Berwick, but also surrounding communities in both Maine and New Hampshire.
The high point of our church life is our 11 AM Sunday morning worship service, and we invite you to attend. Attend as a family.
We celebrate communion, also known as the "Lord's Supper", the first Sunday of each month during the worship service. This is in response to Jesus' direction to periodically share bread (symbolic of His body) and wine (symbolic of His blood) in His memory.
The United Methodist Church offers "open communion". That is, we do not have any specific requirements for persons to participate, other than their own conscience. All are welcome. One need not be a member of this church, the United Methodist Church, or any church at all. Children may participate at the discretion of their parents.
Ushers invite those who wish to participate to come forward, break a piece of bread off a common loaf, dip it in a chalice of grape juice (symbolic of wine), and then eat it. Some people choose to remain at the front of the church in prayer for a few moments.
There is an offering plate nearby during communion. Donations received during communion go to the "pastor's discretionary fund". This is simply a fund available to the pastor to use as needed when they encounter persons in need in the community.
For more information about the Lord's Supper, read the three versions of this meal as recorded in Matthew 26: 26-30, Mark 14: 22-26, and Luke 22:14-20. This meal is also referred to as the "Last Supper", as it is the last recorded meal of Jesus. The instructions for us to re-enact this meal periodically are detailed in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34, which is excellent reading in preparation for participation.
