Donald served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. For 36 years, he worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a machinist, planner and estimator. For many years, he served on the Evergreen Cemetery Board, serving as chairman. He was an avid ham radio operator and was a member of St. John's Masonic Lodge in South Berwick for over 50 years. Donald was a lifetime member of the Berwick United Methodist Church. He was a talented woodworker, making decorations and other useful items for family and friends. Donald served on the Berwick Sewer Board, was a volunteer firefighter and had spent many hours at The Lodge at Spring Hill, performing odd jobs and helping with the rebuilding effort. Hunting and fishing were among his interests.
Members of the family include his wife, Mary; his daughter, Janet Klebaur; his son, Ronald; three granddaughters, Sarah Jackson, Amy Klebaur and Bethany Heitmann; one grandson, Thomas Cheney; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Carolyn Marden of North Carolina.
A Memorial Service was held Oct. 26 at Berwick United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Les Pettit officiating. Private burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick.
She was born in Johnson, Vt., Sept. 26, 1928, the daughter of Chesley and
Ellen (Symonds) Notemyer.
Mary was the widow of Donald E. Cheney, who died Oct. 22, 2008. She was a
longtime, active member of the Berwick United Methodist Church, where she
also was a member of the Gleaners. She was a member of the South Berwick
Chapter of the O.E.S.
As a young girl, Mary worked at Fossie's Variety Store in Berwick, which
later became Dru & Bill's. She later worked at Hebert's Market in
Somersworth. Mary enjoyed spending time with family and friends at Square
Pond. Working in the kitchen at Spring Hill Lodge was one of her favorite
activities. In recent years she had spent many hours ironing the
tablecloths for the Lodge, which gave her great satisfaction.
Members of the family include her daughter, Janet Klebaur and husband,
Paul; her son, Ronald; her sister, Noreen Cook and husband, Bill; her
three granddaughters, Sarah Jackson, Amy Klebaur, and Bethany Heitmann;
one grandson, Thomas Cheney; 10 great-grandchildren, and several nieces
and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her sister,
Carolyn Notemyer, who died on
March 13, 2009.
She will be remembered by her many friends at Spring Hill, at Church, and
in the community.
A Memorial service was held Saturday,
March 21, at 2 p.m. at Berwick United Methodist Church, 37 School St.,
Berwick, Maine.

BERWICK, Maine - Donald E. Cheney died Oct. 22, 2008, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital at the age of 87. He was the son of Maurice and Marion (Tebbetts) Cheney.
