History of Methodism

We believe in a loving God who created all things and provided for our salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. More simply stated...We are Christians.

The early church was "legalized" by the Roman Empire in the 4th century AD. Over the years, this state church became known as the Roman Catholic Church. In the 16th century, there were two deviations from the official church. Martin Luther led the Protestant Reformation in Germany, and King Henry of England split from the Roman Catholic Church to form the Anglican Church.

In the 18th century, an Anglican priest named John Wesley sought to correct problems in the Anglican Church. He went out to the people to preach a simple message to average people.

Some of his followers came to America and founded the Methodist Church at Baltimore in 1784. His preaching, and that of his followers, led to the formation of the Methodist Church and a number of other denominations. Over the years, there have been a number of divisions and mergers in the Church. The present United Methodist Church was formed in 1968 from the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church.
