Emmanuel History

Emmanuel Church History

The Emmanuel United Methodist Church is located in Morattico, Virginia. The first church house was dedicated on September 16, 1893, at a location east of the present site. In the year 1897, this structure was destroyed by fire. Another building was erected around 1898. The bell, which may still be seen in front of the present Emmanuel Church, was donated in 1900.  During the latter part of the 19th Century Emmanuel relocated to the present church site. For many years, Emmanuel operated as a station church, but was eventually merged into the Lancaster Charge. On January 1, 1970, Emmanuel and Bethel became a two-point Charge.  In June of 1960 Emmanuel constructed a church school facility as a community center for many activities. In the summer of 1993, a new entrance foyer was completed.  Simultaneously, a new church sign and a new steeple, both memorials, were dedicated.

The Fall of 2003 brought Hurricane Isabel and Emmanuel Church and the surrounding community was flooded.  The leadership of Emmanuel wasted no time in restoring the building and putting it back in operation.
