| What's
The Buzz??
That's the sound
coming from the 7 and 8 year old Sunday School classroom!! We
recently accomplished our goal of collecting $30 to send to HEIFER
International to purchase Honey Bees! Thanks to all the children who
saved up their pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.
Be prepared to
hear a new noise coming from the classroom soon...We voted to purchase a
flock of chicks next and hope to have the $20 collected by sometime this
Spring.
For more
information on HEIFER International, look in the Narthex for flyers and
little brown arks. If you'd like to donate to our chick fund, stop
by our classroom any Sunday morning. |

Room
There is a small
group of prayer warriors that meet after the 1st service in the Prayer
Room off the Narthex. They will pray with you, for you, or for
others. Join them! |

A New
Sunday School Class Has Begun!
It’s
an adult discussion/fellowship class which begins and ends promptly from
10:30am
to
11:30am
. This class is located in the
last classroom on the left in the new church wing.
We have started using the book called “I Believe, Now What?” by
Michael Simpson. The book
contains 40 questions every new Christian asks.
This study is great for new Christians who have recently accepted
Christ as their Savior, those who wish to renew and deepen their
relationship with Christ, and those who seek to develop a relationship
with God.
The
past two weeks, we dealt with the questions, “What Just Happened?” and
“What Will Happen Next?” (Come and see what’s next!)
Samples of a few questions down the road are: “How
Does God communicate?”, “How Do I Pray?”, “I Messed Up, What Do I
do Now?”, and “What Does Trusting God Look Like?”.
Come and join us and see why we are so excited!!!

***************************
We're pleased to
share exciting news about a fundraising program for Union United Methodist
Church. It is called "scrip" and it's the fundraising
program that works while you shop.
Scrip is simply a
word that means " substitute money" - in other words, scrip is
gift certificates from national and local retailers. They are the
same gift certificates that you buy at the store. Many popular
retailers participate in our scrip program including Disney, JC Penney,
Foot Locker, The Gap, Home Depot, Pizza Hut, Super G and many, many
others.
You are probably
asking yourself how these stores help us raise money. It's simple -
scrip participating retailers agree to sell gift certificates to our
organization at a discount. Member families like yours buy the
certificates for full face value, they redeem them for full face value,
and our church keeps the difference as revenue. And scrip is
exciting, because everybody wins:
-- The
retailer gets cash up front and repeat business
-- You get
a powerful fundraising alternative that involves no selling...
-- Our
Church gets a regular source of revenue
The beauty of
scrip is that you put your regular household shopping dollars to
work. You earn money for our church without spending a single
additional penny. Just spend your regular shopping dollars with
scrip at the stores that participate in the scrip program! And scrip
can be used for just about any household purchase including food,
clothing, entertainment, gasoline and even dining out.
The Union United
Methodist Church's scrip program promises to be a simple and effective
fundraising program.
Thanks for your
support.

| LENDING
LIBRARY
The "Loving Arms" Christian
Women's Group is excited to announce the opening of our "Lending
Library." In the next few weeks, we will be having a book drive to
obtain books for the library. All books and videos are to be
Christian-based books.
Christian Reading Books ~
Reference Books ~ Bible Study
Books ~ Devotional Books and Literature ~
Self-help
books for Men and Women ~ Parenting Books
~
Children's Bible Stories and Videos ~
Christian-based videos.
Each book will have a "Donated
by" sticker and library sign-out card in it. We are looking for books
that have really inspired you and that you want to share with others.
Examples are: "The Case for Christ," "The Left Behind"
series and other religious books; books on tape and videos (kids and
adults).
The books and videos will be available as
resources for our congregation.
Sherry Willsey and Linda Pargoe have
volunteered to head up this ministry as the librarians and will track
the incoming and outgoing books. Each person who wants to check out a
book will be required to fill out a "library card
application."
The books can be checked out for a
maximum of 4 weeks. Reminders will be sent to those who have exceeded
the deadline.
The library will be located in the
Fellowship Hall. You will be able to check out and return books on Sundays
in between services during Fellowship Hour. We will be setting up the
library database as books are being donated to us.
If you have any questions or suggestions,
please contact:
Linda or Sherry
We are really excited
about the new "Lending "Library" and we hope you will
utilize this new resource. |

Loving Arms Christian Women's
Group
Come join Union's new group for young women! This
group is formed for the purpose of connecting women intellectually and
spiritually through worship, education, mission and fellowship. Take
some spiritual time for yourself and make new friends. Each meeting
will start with a Bible Study and or devotion. We then will take time
for fellowship activities.
Our group is going to use the Women of Faith Bible
study series. The Women of Faith Bible studies are designed to take
you on a journey towards a more intimate relationship with Christ by
bringing you together with your sisters in the faith. Our first series
will be "Celebrating Friendship." Whether you're
stressed-out, bored and lonely, looking for new friends or scuttling
to keep up with long-time soul mates, the "celebrating
friendship" sessions will encourage our group to cultivate
woman-to-woman friendships. We will...
• Relate your
friendship expectations
• Learn how to
appreciate the similarities and differences among friends
• Discuss ways to be
supportive, honest, and committed
• Find out how to work
through relationship snags
• Celebrate joys and
triumphs together
• Most of all, the
springboard for our discussions will be God's
Word.
The Lord is a faithful Friend who sticks
"closer than a Brother" (or a sister!) and our group will
explore his everlasting commitment to us, the friendship stories in
his Book, and the qualities of his Spirit that deepen relationships.
The God of the universe teaching you about friendship?
There's no better expert! So let's dig into the Bible! Talk and
laugh and disagree. Have fun discovering, supporting, and
challenging one another.
Our initial meeting was on August 11th at the home of Becki Lathem.
If you are interested in joining, or have any questions or
suggestions, please feel free to contact: Linda Pargoe

Evangelism
Leadership Summit Havana, Cuba January 7-14, 2004
Pastor Schuler was invited to attend the EVANGELISM LEADERSHIP
SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS.
The event was hosted by the World Methodist Evangelism Institute of
the World Methodist Council. More than 120 Methodist and Wesleyan leaders
from twenty countries of
North America
,
South America
,
Central America
, and the
Caribbean
…including bishops and heads of churches representing 26
Wesleyan/Methodist denominations.
Two
of the highest moments of the delegates to the conference involved the
Cuban Methodists. On Saturday,
clergy and bishops from all areas of the
Americas
joined Cuban pastors in baptizing more than 200 adults in an outdoor
ceremony filled with music, dance and prayer.
At that service, final 10 of 500 new bicycles were blessed and
presented to Cuban Methodist pastors who use these bicycles to meet the
needs of their people.
On
Sunday, the 120 delegates spread out across
Havana
to worship in Cuban churches, where many of them served as guest preachers
or liturgists. That evening
everyone gathered for a service at the Cuban bishop’s church.
The delegates were charged with devising a plan to evangelize the
world over the next two years. Following
the gathering of input
from all the delegates, they were commissioned to return to their home
nations and launch the World Methodist Evangelism Emphasis 2004-2006 and
“to go and make disciples of Jesus Christ and spread the revival that is
happening in Cuban to every corner of the
Americas
.”
Here are a few photos showing the city of
Havana
and its culture, highlights of the meeting, and the participants.
If you have any questions after viewing the photographs, see Pastor
Don for an explanation.
