To build Christian social consciousness of the nature of poverty and homelessness and the working poor; promote compassion and action. Beacon UMC will engage in a 5-month series of poverty and homelessness awareness education and occasional social activiites and dialogues.

Every first Sunday of each month, Beacon volunteers to prepare 2 healthy dinners and 2 healthy breakfasts for eight women who are participants in The Sophia Way, a single homeless women's self-sufficiency program. This effort promotes affordable housing through Christian compassion via material support of this project, and is a partnership with Bellevue First Congregational Church, Eastside Interfaith Social Concerns Council.

Coordinator: Jennielyn M. Baradi
During the Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter, Beacon collects non-perishible foods every Sunday to deliver to the Emergency Feeding Program (EFP) of Seattle and King County. These efforts help promote food security through Christian compassion. In 2008, EFP ran out of food in September due to the souring economy and increased demand. Ideally, each member or household at Beacon would bring at least one non-perishible food item for this cause.

Coordinator: Joseph Adriano
Periodically through the year, members of Beacon volunteer to promote affordable housing through Christian social justice through human capital support of this project. Habitat for Humanity offers professionally supervised affordable home-building activities in East King County.

At least once a month, Beacon volunteers an early morning shift to prepare and serve meals to our community through First United Methodist Church's Shared Breakfast Ministry. For more information, visit First United Methodist Church of Seattle.

Every third Saturday of each month, Beacon volunteers to help bag groceries at the White Center Food Bank from 10am - 1:30pm. The White Center Food Bank serves more than 1,200 hungry families each month in the White Center community.
