THE BAUGHMAN TOWER CLOCK: Four New Cumberland landmarks that have helped define our church and community for nearly one hundred years are poised to be restored and returned to their rightful places on the sides of the Baughman Bell Tower, looking down over Bridge Street.
Over the winter the clock mechanism and connecting gears and drive shafts have been meticulously cleaned, repaired and lubricated in an artisan’s shop in Rochester, NY. This month they are scheduled to be brought back and remounted with additional work slated to clean the beautiful 28” Maneely bell and its striker and the repair and cleaning of the bell’s steel yoke and stand.
In the meantime, church volunteers cleaned and repaired the clock faces, sandblasting and painting the surrounding metal canisters and replacing the Plexiglas fronts and clocks’ back lights.
All of this work will cost around $25,000 plus an additional $5,000 for the lift rentals. There has been $20,000 raised through private donations and youth fundraisers. Over the next few weeks The Clock Committee will have an appeal to raise the remainder of the funds and we are hoping that each family will consider a donation of $100. If you can give more or less we appreciate any gift. Please make checks payable to Baughman UMC designated for “Clock Restoration”. Once this work is completed there is no reason why the four tower clocks can’t serve our church and community for many more generations. Thank You.
The Central Pennsylvania Conference will be hosting the Northeast Jurisdiction Conference from July 14 through July 18. Delegates and Bishops from all the conferences in the jurisdiction will gather at the Harrisburg Hilton and the Whitaker Center to elect and assign bishops, to make decisions regarding conference alignments within the jurisdiction and care for other important matters.
The Churches of the Harrisburg and New Cumberland Districts will have a special role in welcoming our sisters and brothers to our area. We will be extending hospitality in the name of our Savior and on behalf of our annual conference. Our plan is to welcome incoming delegates at both the airport and the train station, as well as in the parking garage and at the hotel entrance on Monday, July 14. We will also be providing direction and assistance within the hotel and the Whitaker Center each day of the conference. Hospitality representatives will be required from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm Monday, 8:00 am to 8:00 pm Tuesday through Thursday and 8:00 am to early afternoon on Friday. Further details will follow regarding shifts, parking and shuttles to the hotel. We also plan to hold an orientation session prior to the conference. Needless to say, many volunteers are needed to make this level of hospitality possible.
This is a great opportunity for any of the groups in our church. Contact Richard Felty or Rev. JoAnn Darrow and leave your name, address, phone # and home church.
From the Health and Wellness Committee:
Several people who no longer drive and are homebound or living in a retirement facility have expressed interest in attending church occasionally. We are wondering if several individuals would be willing to accept responsibility for this ministry. The question is two fold: those individuals who would be interested (if transportation can be arranged) in attending Baughman at least monthly, please contact us to make your interest known; also, those members who would be willing to assist with transportation, no more than once per month, please also contact the church to let us know of your interest. God is a God of possibilities, so we would like to determine if these possibilities may become a reality. Thank You!
Vacation Bible School: For those of you who are planning your summer vacations, please make sure you put Vacation Bible School on the calendar: June 23 - 27 at 6:15-8:30 p.m. Our theme this year is: “We Need a Hero – Heroes of the Bible." Children aged 3 through 5th Grade are invited to attend. Anyone who might be willing to donate his or her time assisting with any of the many areas of preparation for this time together, please contact Rev. Yorks.
Director of Music Ministry Sought: Baughman Memorial United Methodist Church is seeking to fill the permanent position of Director of Music, beginning July 1, 2008. The Director of Music will interface with the ordained ministers and the worship committee in planning and directing the worship music ministry of the church including the adult chancel choir, bell choir, family choir, and children’s choir. This position calls for qualities as a leader and teacher in addition to talent, giftedness and a strong educational background in music. Interested candidates should submit a resume including educational background and experience to Rev. Brand W. Eaton, Baughman Memorial United Methodist Church, 228 Bridge Street, New Cumberland, PA 17070 or contact us via email.
Prayer Shawl Ministry: Do you knit or crochet? If so, the UMW extends an invitation to you to join together in the Linebaugh Parlor at 1:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month to participate in the Prayer Shawl Ministry. This ministry began as a gesture to leave a small gift of love with a person. When we pray over the shawls we knit, we know the shawl will be given to a person who needs to be comforted. By knowing prayers are knitted in the Shawl, love is with them and they are not alone. Come and learn about this very exciting mission. Please bring #13 knitting needles and 3 – 6 oz. skeins of yarn.
Intercessory Prayer Group: On Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m., you’ll find a new group meeting in the Linebaugh Parlor. The Intercessory Prayer group gathers to support one another and lift up praises and concerns from the congregation.
Pew cards are available each Sunday for requests. These are collected and shared within the prayer group. People with specific needs are invited to attend and receive prayer support. Anyone who is interested in being part of the group is welcome to attend. Special thanks to those who have come to pray and those who have shared orally or in writing prayer requests.
Contact us via email to be a part of the group, or if you have questions.

In Crohn’s disease, there is an abnormal immune response, whereby white blood cells infiltrate the intestinal lining, causing chronic inflammation. It generally affects the end of the small intestine (ileum) and the beginning of the last intestine (colon), but may involve any part of the gastro-intestinal tract. The good news is there can be normal healthy bowel in between patches of diseased bowel.
It is estimated there are 1,000,000 Americans with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Males and females seem to be affected equally. Studies have shown that about 20-25% of patients may have a close relative with either Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis. More good news – in general, people with Crohn’s disease lead active and productive lives. There is no test to diagnose. This is determined from the patient’s history and physical exam, lab and x-ray’s, and findings on endoscopies and pathology tests.
Symptoms include loose, watery or frequent bowel movements, crampy abdominal pain, fever and at times, rectal bleeding. When symptoms are active, other symptoms may include joint pains, fatigue, skin problems and sometimes fistulas may form. While Crohn’s is a chronic disease with an unknown cause, there will be periods when the disease flares, followed by periods of remission when symptoms subside, as is common with many chronic illnesses. I’ve named the cycle: Flare and Repair.
The goal of treatment is to suppress the inflammation, which permits the intestinal tissue to heal, thus reducing symptoms. The groups of medication used to treat Crohn’s disease today are: aminosalicylates, corticosteroids, immune modifiers, antibiotics. Surgery only becomes necessary when medications fail to control the disease symptoms. When a flare occurs, nutrition may need to be limited to a very bland type diet. As with any disease/illness or any other life challenge, “attitude is the paintbrush that colors every situation”. We choose the color. I choose light and bright.
Peace, Love and Blessings,

Your Parish Nurse
Inspirational Verse by Linda Olley
In 1985, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, a life altering "invitation." I've traveled an incredible journey of personal transformation that I could not possibly have imagined. I realize God was preparing me to execute His will for my life: to become a parish nurse.
During the past ten years, I have been writing poetry and utilizing poems as an important part of my ministry to others who are experiencing pain and suffering, as God continues to inspire and lead. Two books of inspirational verse have been published and are available through the church for ten dollars each. This money is used to provide for the continuing health ministry needs of our congregation. God is good! Faith is believing, and believing is achieving. It is our source for help and hope.
From A Book of Inspirational Verse by a Parish Nurse:
Faith
My faith is rock hard, never broken, and always strong
The certainty that thy will be done,
even when things do go wrong.
Then comes the calm in the turbulent sea
I reach out to God, and his right hand finds me.
When all else appears fruitless, our God remains true
To provide spiritual energy for me and for you
Just move one step forward, and God will take more
Like wings on eagles, your strength will soar.
There is no task too great or too small
That you cannot accomplish when you give it your all.
Sometimes you cry and the tears cleanse your soul
Oh, the solace you will find as your faith really grows.
From Steeple of Hope: A Book of Inspirational Poems by Linda Olley:
Uncertainty
If you knew tomorrow, would it change today?
Life is full of surprises, that is life's way
Tomorrow is an invitation, so don't open it today
Just live "to now," and trust and obey.
In worrying about something that may never be
You rob today of the mystery
There is no warranty for your journey in life
And dwelling on the unknown will cause you strife.
When you awaken each morning, thank God you're alive
It is your future from yesterday, don't disregard.
While tomorrow is uncertain, and yesterday is past
You have today, so make it last!
