UMM groups that have reported events/ministires for the NEW FEATURE page:

Oak Hill
This past year our UMM elected a full slate of officers for the first time. Also through a series of church wide meetings we identified the direction we wanted our group to take and created five teams for the men. Spirituality, Fellowship, Outreach, Service, and Support. Each team is comprised of a team leader and four or five more men with the caveat that at least two of the members have not been active in UMM in the past.We feel this will broaden our appeal to more men at Oak Hill as well as having 20-25 men involved in our UMM leadership instead of the two or three we have had in the past. Looking forward to an exciting year.

Past president OHUMC UMM

La Grange
Meeting Schedule:
We meet the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m.
There is no meeting in December.

What We Do:
We have a meal followed by a devotional. We attempt to have a program each month and this follows the devotional. Last month our program was presented by the retiring supt.of schools for La Grange and the incoming supt. This program covered the building usage of the school district and our meeting was held during the first week of school. Our program this month will cover a somewhat controversial subject of providing water to the San Antonio Water System. We give our speakers an opportunity to depart before we start our business meeting.

Several years ago our group began selling BBQ at the Round Top antique show and this operation has grown considerably through the years. It has become our "cash cow" which enables us to provide considerable support for various charitable causes (both local and beyond). We now have our operation at the Marburger Farms. We serve clients Tuesday through Saturday at the April and October shows. The size of our volume has outgrown the ability of UMM to handle the staffing needs. Our wives, youth of FUMC and various other individuals make it possible to continue.

A partial list of organizations receiving funding from us in 2006 is listed below:

  • Boy Scouts of America Troop 204 (UMM is the charter sponsor)
  • Children's Advocacy Center
  • Family Crisis Center
  • Fayette County Child Welfare Board
  • First United Methodist Church (church equipment and parsonage repairs)
  • Habitat for Humanity (Fayette County)
  • Kairos Prison Ministry
  • Louisiana Methodist Conference
  • Methodist Children's Home
  • Methodist Mission Home
  • Ministry to Border Friendship
  • Society of St. Andrew (feed the hungry)
  • Strength for Service to God and Country (book of daily devotionals for military personnel)
  • St. Marks Hospital (new hospital in La Grange)
  • Young Life of La Grange
  • Youth with a Mission
Outreach:
While giving money to various causes provides good feelings among our membership, there are other events which cost little or nothing except for our labor and produces greater self-satisfaction. One such event occurred recently when a local resident was hospitalized with a foot amputation. Although he is not a member of our church he was known for planting flowers around our high school and hospital. Four of our members built two wheel chair ramps after learning his wife was concerned about his mobility. This was truly a warm, outreach action by our group toward this respected, minority family.

Personal Energy Transportation "P.E.T." Project:
Another ministry we are enjoying is helping the P.E.T.  Project in Luling. We have taken a crew two times to assist in building the mobility units which are shipped to many third world countries. We will also set up a system to build component wooden parts here in La Grange. We will buy the wood and our members will cut, sand and drill holes making them ready for assembly in Luling.

We have a busy group here at FUMC but face the same problems other churches deal with. How to grow our membership among the younger men who have such demands on their time. We enjoy a large group of retirees so that keeps us going.

Buda
Weekly Schedule:
Buda United Methodist Church Men's Group
Meets first Sunday of each Month (unless otherwise notified)
Fellowship Hall, Buda United Methodist Church, 7:30 a.m.
Hearty breakfast, outside speaker, business meeting, all in one hour!

Outreach:
Probably the two chief beneficiaries of our Men’s Group is the church’s annual mission trip; we contribute $5,000 towards the church’s "Extreme Home Makeover" (“matching funds” towards building a home for a deserving family) and $300 individual “Scholarships” for Buda UMC graduating seniors to use toward furthering their education.

Organization:
Past President Chip Sparks helped us to get formally affiliated with the larger United Methodist Men, and Immediate Past President Mike Schneider helped us to find a “balance” between our devotional time and our monthly business meeting. (It was largely a business meeting formerly.) Two of our current areas of focus are including ALL men of Buda United Methodist Church whether they are members of the “Men’s Group” or not and making a conscious effort to recruit younger Men’s Group members. Our Executive Committee at this time consists of a Men’s Group President, Vice-president for Programs, and a combined Secretary/Treasurer.

Buda UMC Men’s Group activities include:
  • Monthly Devotional/Business Meetings
  • Annual Men’s Group Religious Retreat
  • Fundraising Golf Tournament
  • Annual Garage Sale Fundraiser
  • Donations to Scouting, Friends of Scouting
  • Buda Fest Spud Booth – Food booth at annual Buda Fest
  • Buda Fest Cross Booth (Cross House Gang – Making beautiful “pocket crosses” to give to anyone so that the person will remind themselves of their devotion)
  • Proceeds from sale of table crosses throughout the year
  • Memorial Student Scholarship
  • Easter Sunday Breakfast for Congregation
  •  Mother’s Day Flowers
  • Project Graduation Donation
  • “Scholarships” to graduating Seniors
  • $5,000 Annual “Matching Funds” to Adult Mission Trip
  •  Food for Church Clean Up Day, Vacation Church School
  • 2006 Santa Cruz Fiesta Parking Fundraising (This was our last year for this.)
  • San Marcos Tubing with Church Youth
  • Pumpkin Patch Fundraising Event
  • Santa Claus Fundraising Event
There is at least one key Men’s Group member, a ramrod, and a great deal of effort behind each one of these activities. We would invite any of our Austin Area United Methodist Men to join us the first Sunday of each month for great food, fellowship, and F-U-N!

Clark Lyman

St. Mark's Austin
We have a group of men that consists of between 8 and 13 that meets every Tuesday morning at 8:00 AM for breakfast. We swap stories, discuss world affairs and then we do odd jobs that needs to be done around the church and parsonage. We call our group "The Honey Doers". There is not much that needs to be done around the church that this group cannot repair. By doing this we save the church quite a bit of money. We assist with our food pantry by getting food from Austin Food bank and helping the ladies stock our pantry.

Clovis Caprenter,
President, Men's Group
