- "Amachi, Break the Chain", a ministry to boys of incarcerated parent/s - Tracy Guthrie, Partnership and Marketing Associate, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas
Amachi is a mentoring
program for children of incarcerated parents. The word Amachi is a
Nigerian word that means, “Who knows what God has brought us through
this child?”
Amachi helps children reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one relationships.
The children served are between the ages of 6 to 16
A one year commitment from both mentor and child is asked for.
The child is paired with an
adult mentor based on similar interests so they can spend time with
each other once a week. The “Big” and “Little” choose what they want to
do when hanging out together. They may watch a movie, play basketball,
do homework or simply just hang out.
The entire time you are
matched with your Little Brother you have the professional support of
the agency to help nurture the relationship into a long lasting one.
Many kids are on the waiting list to be paired with men willing to mentor.
