Fresh Every Morning

I love home made bread - the taste, the texture, the smell of loaves fresh from the oven. Make mine whole wheat, thanks, but the fresher the better. Without all those preservatives, it gets stale pretty fast. Of course, it seldom gets the chance around my house.

Funny the difference a day or two makes in the same loaf of bread. Oh, you can toast it, but who wants to munch on bread from a few days ago? Let it go a few more days, and it begins to grow things. What a difference freshness means.

Speaking of freshness, how current is your stock of God's goodness? The Bible tells us God's mercies are "new every morning." God's loving care is offered to us fresh with each new day, like bread fresh from the oven. Strange how often we rely on last week's or last year's delivery, trying to live on memories of "back then." I guess we shouldn't be surprised if religion seems stale and tasteless, if we haven't sought God's presence and love recently. Fresh faith is better, too!

Why not try a fresh taste of God's presence? Maybe you haven't prayed for a while, but God is still eager to hear you. Just tell him what's on your heart and mind - you'll be surprised how quickly the awkward feeling will disappear. Take another look at your Bible - it's more up to date than you remember. And stop by your church this weekend. You'll find folks like yourself, who find it hard to live on "stored up religion." There's nothing else quite like the fresh stuff.
